View Full Version : Political Correctness.
Xshare 01-01-2004, 12:23 PM Political correctness these days... It's like people are walking around on eggshells. It's a bit over the top, in my opinion. What really tipped the scales for me was last night's New Years bash in NY. I was watching them sing "God Bless the USA", and they just completely changed the words (for political correctness).
It went from the original lyrics of "And I wont forget, the men who died, who gave that right to me"
to
"And I won't forget, the ones who died, who gave that right to me"
What do you think? Should the lyrics in songs be changed for political correctness, especially classic songs?
I don't want ANY discussions about how they use God Blessing the USA in the song, that's NOT what this topic is about. Unless you can somehow tie that into PC.
Shyne 01-01-2004, 12:25 PM It's Pathetic. I have nothing else to say.
Rob83 01-01-2004, 12:26 PM uh it's not "to save that right for me" .. it's
"And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me."
At least get the lyrics right.
KDAWebServices 01-01-2004, 01:30 PM It's nuts. Over here in the UK employers were told not to let employees display xmas cards with images of Christ on them in case they offended people of other religions - I'm sorry, but that's what Christmas is about, the birth of Christ, and if someone of another religion is living in the UK (A Christian country) then they should respect our beliefs, we shouldn't have to tread on egg-shells for them - If we went to their country of origin etc. then we'd have to fit in, you can bet they wouldn't pander to us. I'm not a racist person, I believe everyone has the right to believe what they want, but they should make an effort to fit in with our cultures etc. as the majority of us over here wouldn't object to seeing Vishnu etc. displayed.
TR Seeks 01-01-2004, 01:32 PM its true. It goes over the top. You can't change traditions to be politically correct
The Pioneer 01-01-2004, 01:58 PM I wouldn't exactly say it is politcal correcting, just making the song modern.
In the past, men was a generic term to cover a majority, now, using ones is the same as men, only it is the generic term we use today...
That's probably not the best explanation, but there isn't much change in those lyrics you posted. I don't think it goes over the top, I just think that it helps to bring unity by not singling out a select group.
HOUSCOUS 01-01-2004, 02:25 PM To avoid the sexism? Probably the same reason called fireman as firefighter right now.

I took that from a post i did in the Merry Christmas thread last year as it is now.
Does anyboyd mind if i expand this a tad into PC [Political Correctness] generally? Do you mind?
There is so much to say about it...
On this song i think you have to remember that it obviously goes back a fair few years, well if it was created then it will have these charactaristics and if you want to stay true to the song you wouldn't change it would you?
I don't know much about this song and its context so i can't say much more at this time.
Critic 01-01-2004, 03:47 PM whoops, this isn't the right thread, sorry, please delete.
That's what happens when you have too many windows open.
RajanUrs 01-01-2004, 04:29 PM If I say "Politics sucks" is it politcally correct orpolitically incorrect
The Pioneer 01-01-2004, 05:45 PM Politics sucks, I think that's just an ignorant phrase. Politics is what makes the world go 'round, and you have to keep up with it.
I don't think you can categorize it under neither [politically correct or not politically correct].
P.S. I didn't mean any offense to you.
NE-Andy 01-01-2004, 06:10 PM Well, isn't America the country with "In God We Trust" printed on their money? If so, I think they should change that before they start worring about a silly song...
Just my two cents...

They need to lay down some authority.
