View Full Version : Remote Reboot?

Hey guys,

I was curious what hardware you are using for your remote reboot services? I was looking at a couple products, but it involves using a switch & a power strip. I'm looking for an all in one product that has access via ethernet (not phone).

Thanks,
Paul

Apc makes a all in once product called the masterswitch, it has 8 outlets, any product withmore than 8 outlets requires seperate switch and strip, i wish they made a all in one...

Also, take a look at the Power Tower by Sentry: http://www.servertech.com/

Well, it sort of an all in one unit but it takes to parts to make it an all in one :)

Damn :). Why would someone only make an 8 outlet device? Ah well. Anyhow, do you guys know what these switches run for the total package?

I was looking at some bandwidth monitors today also. Anyone familiar with the Packeteer? Comments/Suggestions?

Thanks,
Paul

packeteer is a great product but way way way to expensive like 10k-20k the apc masterswitches run 300.00-400.00

We are using masterswitch for our remote reboot service. It is awesome ! you can assign a port to one specific user. You can use telnet, web browser and even WAP to remore reboot your server. It even has event monitors and let you know of any events.

Again I agree with most people that masterswitch only provide 8 ports, a strange number for a standard rack.

I got some from ebay for under $300 each.

edwow, are you using MasterSwitch(es) or MasterSwitch Plus?
How do you configure a masterswitch for wap access?

Energy the masterswitch models just started supporting wap, some of the older revisions dont, most of ours dont but we just bought some new ones which do, i havent tried them out yet but should be cool

That's an interresting question.

Since I still haven't found out what it is maybe one of you knows.
Wich reboot hardware does BURST use? ;)

I hope you guys understand what I mean...

We use APC Masterswitch Plus units, with a custom interface we programmed for the client backend.
The way they come, there is a big security hole in them that allows anyone with access to reboot any port on them...which would be bad, very bad...
Plus, they are set up to only allow 4 units per config/ip...so we had to code a client interface to deal with that as well...

This is built into our manage.burst.net dedicated/co-lo client interface control panel which we are releasing to our clients in the immediate future.

I hope this means REAL REAL REAL SOON.

We never ended up buying a remote reboot device. We have never had a server lock up.

1:41pm up 91 days, 13:41

and that is on all 14 of our servers. We did take them down 91 days ago to add extra hardware....

91 days is great uptime, but a little offtopic.... so back on topic, did you find any product which fit your need for more than 8 outlets and a all in one device

Whats the odds of a linux box coming back up after you kill the power?

I know when we did testing of our RPCs 85% of the servers had to have a person at console just to run fsck after they was powered off and on.

We use APC Masterswitch Plus units as well, .. most of the time it's just a waste, the machines never come up clean after a hard reboot like that (it defeats the purpose when the customer has to call us to go to the noc room and fsck the partitions) , now .. with the new ext3 (I believe it's supose to come out with RH 7.2) .. then it's worth it :)

carlos do you know what the difference is between the plus and the regular

Cpanel based servers have a "nofsck" based script which assists with that.

Yes, the plus you can stack them togueder (up to 8 units I believe), so you log into 1 ip and have access to 8 units right there, the regular one you simply can't do that, everything else is the same
