View Full Version : HalfPriceHosting are robbing Ba^#!%ds!
inwks 09-28-2000, 11:46 AM I cancelled my HPH account in July, and have email confirmation. Received my CC bill, and on the day I cancelled, they signed me up for another year.
How nice of them. Naturally, by CC company is investigating.
DynastyHost 09-28-2000, 02:27 PM I think you should pay full price next time :)
Learner 09-28-2000, 02:30 PM Half price the first year + another year (unwanted) = full price anyway :D

It's amazing how a web host will do this and maybe get away with it.

They do it precisely because they *do* get away with a lot of the time (though maybe not by charging a years worth at once *lol*). All those shonky webhosts who pop another ones worth of hosting when you leave them figure most people will not notice, or just write it off as too much trouble. If they do it often enough it gets to be a tidy little sum of extra profit. Best thing to do is what you have, and contact your CC company and have it charged back. If everyone did this all the time then the loose cannons would be the ones realising it's not worth their time, and might induce them to be a little more honest.

Duster 09-28-2000, 04:11 PM It would be a bigger help if people filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the state attorney general (for those companies located in the U.S.)
Unless they've changed, The BBB will only show unresolved complaints, so they are of limited usefulness. I think showing how many complaints in total, along with how many are still unresolved, says much more.
The state attorney's office will keep track of total complaints and has the power to do something about them.
Its not enough to just get your money back. Reporting these charlatans and helping other people avoid them can be more effective at putting them out of business.

Hmmm... wouldn't this be construed as a criminal activity?
Because in this case the account was cancelled... and the hosting company in question renew it on the same day... that too not for one month, or a quarter... but one full year !!!
This seems to be a case of downright intention to harrass and cheat.

diyoha 09-28-2000, 04:55 PM I bet they would claim it was an "honest" mistake ;(
A whole bunch of chargebacks start adding up! So in the end the shadey companies lose out

inwks 09-29-2000, 04:07 AM I had an email back from them claiming that I did not cancel because I did not use the online form (which I tried to do, and it failed).
BUT... my contract was/is not due for renewal until December. I was just fed up to the back teeth of them always changing their plans, no real point of contact etc, so I moved and decided to change in July. I wasn't expecting a refund of the unused months, but they have to right to renew an account 6 months early, whether I cancelled or not. Pure fraud in my opinion, stay away from them!
Chicken 09-29-2000, 04:42 AM THAT is insane! I'd be all over them... email them letting them know that if they do not refund your unused months and refund the charge IMMEDIATELY, you will be sure to write up some choice reviews, write the BBB, the State A.G., and discuss the matter in forums such as this UNTIL it is resolved. I would also give them xDAYS to refund this, and then state that if by x, there is no refund posted, you will be requesting a charge back from your cc company.
inwks 09-29-2000, 04:48 AM I've already asked my CC company for a charge back. Which reminds me, must badger them for a solution....
