View Full Version : 32MB RAM - is my server a DOG?
nudetravel 09-27-2001, 11:26 AM I have a RaQ3 w/32MB RAM. I know it is not much, but I am only paying $50 month for it (ixpress.com)
My intended use for the machine is to offer free web-hosting to a very select group, in exchange for free advertising on their website. Most of these sites will be small (under 10 pages) basic sites with fairly low traffic. I would like to have about 100 of these type of sites.
I have installed PHP4 and MySQL (SQL for script support - no fancy data driven stuff). I would like to install a PHP pop3 reader.
Is my server going to be horribly slow? How many page views can I get before the thing gets unstable?
Thanks for the input.
Mark
UmBillyCord 09-27-2001, 01:10 PM Yes. If you run MySQL and PHP. The CPU won't be too bad, but you will have to add RAM.
PS - isn't ixpress.com bankrupt? I think once Diane Brandis left, Barry Diamond sunk with the ship.
nudetravel 09-27-2001, 01:22 PM I'm sorry - internetexpress.com.
How much RAM would you suggest? The RaQ3 just takes PC100 Sdram Dimms, right? Would 256MB do it?
I am just leasing the server, but surely they would put in a DIMM for me if I sent it to them!

UmBillyCord 09-27-2001, 01:52 PM internetexpress.com was who I was talking about. They are gone from what I heard. I believe they may have been bought though. You may want to check it out. I am very familiar with them, becuse I live a few miles away in San Diego.
As far as RAM. 128 would be fine. 256 of course is better. If you are running low bandwidth, low CGI use sites (simple HTML sites), then 128 will be fine. We have RAQ2's with 128 RAM running 150 sites. They have been for 2 1/2 years now! We do not allow MySQL or CGI intense scripts though, so we limit the trouble. I can tell you, 32 RAM will not cut it.
ashley 09-27-2001, 02:14 PM ive emailed internetexpress twice and recieved no answer that was over a week ago.
skylab 09-27-2001, 02:38 PM you are correct about the RAM. the RaQ 3's can take up to 512mb of pc100 SDRAM. you can find them cheap at http://www.pricewatch.com/
as for internet express being bought out, i don't know.
nudetravel 09-27-2001, 04:28 PM I JUST got off of the phone with Internet Express - they are still in business - I got through to support in less than 2 minutes. They said to send them the DIMM and they would put it in free, but then it would be THEIR DIMM (I just lease the server). I bought a 256MB DIMM off of pricewatch for $13....not too bad at all!!
Thanks,
Mark
skylab 09-27-2001, 04:31 PM yeah, RAM is just sooo dirt cheap. i used to do QA for a VAR in north carolina for a few years, and i want to throw up when i remember myself thinking $89 was a good deal for a 64mb pc100.
i just upgraded my RaQ4 to 512mb RAM. i'm looking forward to using it up.
nudetravel 09-27-2001, 04:58 PM I remember paying $50-MB when upgrading my Dell 386/25SX from 4MB to 8MB (I needed the memory for my graphical ARCHIE client!!).
Mark:D :stickout
skylab 09-27-2001, 05:00 PM hahah. yeah! i remember paying like, $500 for my first 386. sheesh.

People always think that upgrading RAM in a 1U rackmount chasis is an easy thing to do ... Note, I have build 6 1U servers myself and memory is the one thing that always bothers me a lot. Make sure that your memory module will fit inside a 1U chasis. I prefer a memory module with at most 1.13" tall or even less (Kingmax TinyBGA is very good for this). Don't just get any memory module, especially the cheap one since you may ended up not using it if it won't fit in your RAQ.
cheers,

nudetravel 10-02-2001, 02:28 PM I'm sorry, I missed the request for more info on Internet Express (www.internetexpress.com).
I have only had my RaQ with them for about 6 weeks. So far, no complaints. I looked, and I have only had 3 occasions to email them and all emails were answered with a couple of hours.
I called them 2x last week and got through both times within a few minutes. However, when I called the toll free number it didn't seem to work, so I was dialing their regular number.
As far as I am aware, my server hasn't been down at all. Ping times have been consistantly good.
Are you all emailing sales or support? Maybe you should try the support address - UmBilly indicated someone left, maybe it was whoever was handling sales for them and they haven't changed the email address yet.
As for the memory - I hope it fits!! I'll have to cal Ixpress and see if they have gotten it yet - it isn't in the server yet anyway.
