View Full Version : Host offering huge HD just for backup?
freeflight2 12-28-2003, 10:06 PM Hi,
we setup all our servers @ thePlanet (great company!) and now we are looking for an host at a different location to backup the data to with these kind of features:
- HD 100GB+
- CPU, RAM etc. dont matter.
- price as low as possible.
- Bandwidth: 400GB+
any ideas?
Steven 12-28-2003, 10:17 PM managed.com would be perfect for backup solution
freeflight2 12-28-2003, 10:46 PM thx steve... this market is getting crazy: $55 for 1.2T transfer!... is their connectivity any good?
freeflight2 12-28-2003, 10:47 PM also do they offer custom solutions, e.g. 200G drives or SCSI?
mainarea 12-28-2003, 10:48 PM It's actually 1GB transfer, check for all of the hidden fees on the order page. They have 1 Gig-E line right now to AboveNet, and may be getting another to GBLX sometime in the future. For a backup server, Managed.com should be fine.

Steven 12-28-2003, 11:07 PM like the cpanel hidden fee
Dan L 12-28-2003, 11:26 PM Try DV2. For ~$220 you can get Dual Xeon's with 2TB bandwidth and a 73GB SCSI drive. You can add another drive for a moderate fee aswell. I'm personally using DV2 and considering ThePlanet for a backup. :P
wheimeng 12-29-2003, 08:01 AM Either of them would be fine. But I personally would go with TP as the price is almost the same.
vetrun 12-29-2003, 09:10 AM At tranxactglobal.com you can get 200GB IDE drives for a once off setup cost. Just get a low end server and stick in a couple of 200GB drives. :)

When did he post that?
The offer is 1200GB and CPanel free the first month. After that, it's 1000GB per month and CPanel is extra.
Aushosts 12-29-2003, 11:14 AM The bold quote was matt, the plain text quote was from managed.com

If he's looking for the cheapest server with 100+GB, he could always go for the $85/month plan at Managed.com that has the 120GB HD (Which will give you around 99GB space after OS install and their partitioning). I can't check on their upgrade/addon prices, as their site isn't responding to any HTTP requests right now - Let's see how long this goes on for.

UH-Matt 12-29-2003, 12:10 PM We have some servers at Cyberwurx, they built us some machines with plenty of HDD space. Perfect for our backup solution and in a different DC to our main servers. Might be worth emailing them your requirements.

Nope :) 1200GB of transfer for the first month, 1000GB after that. I wouldn't say that they offer free CPanel either, since it's only free for the first month. The site is very deceptive until you click onto the order page (https://secure.managed.com/celeron_order.htm).

ChrisTech 12-29-2003, 06:07 PM Servermatrix the super celeron w/ 200 gig hd is like $109 a month I believe. Which has 1TB of transfer.

They already have a server at ThePlanet, and want an offsite backup.

Whoopsie :D
cywkevin 12-30-2003, 12:13 AM managed.com is probably a decent dc if you give it a chance. I've been considering getting another server there. Waiting for some more input though.
NibiruAnubis 12-30-2003, 01:48 AM I don't like how to say they have "free cpanel" and make you pay after the first month, although I did know that before I signed up so that isn't a big problem but its mis-leading. For an off-site backup, why would you need Cpanel on the server? You can just zip all the backups and transfer them in 1 file.
You don' thave to pay for CPanel with managed if you don't want to. Once the first month is over just let the license expire.
cywkevin 12-30-2003, 01:51 AM yeah exactly. Thats whats good about backup servers.
Aushosts 12-30-2003, 03:09 AM If you do just let your cPanel licence expire - make sure you disable and firewall up all the services you don't intend on using for security reasons.... Last thing you want is be totally stuffed because you over looked a minor detail.
Steven 12-30-2003, 03:10 AM or just get the server with out cpanel installed, get a bare installation.
