I administer a Cobalt Raq 4 server. it worked just fine, it has only about 10 sites on it because it is rather new. Problem is that i found lately strange characters in some files (in httpd configuration file and in the raq scripts). The characters seem to follow this rule: a random character (between 1-20 in a file) is taken and from its ASCII code 32 is substracted. I found 000 characters instead of spaces (32 ASCII), 001 and 002 codes (for ! and "). Because of these, my server crashed a couple of times, but the rackshack people made it work again (no script replaced or corrected though). Did you ever heard of such a problem ? What could be the problem ? Is it software or hardware ? The characters appeared out of nowhere, but I remember I made some software updates (from the web interface) just before the problem started. How can I revert to the original settings ?

I would seriously consider doing a fsck on the disk, and if errors show up - have the disk replaced!
