View Full Version : List of web hosting companies to avoid.
biatche 09-27-2001, 04:58 AM I am going to create a list of web hosting companies to avoid with detailed reasons. Start posting your experiences.
Soon when my site is up, I'll work out a good system for an up to date list with past user experiences per host.
For me:
. Powweb.com :bawling: - total ripoff; cgi version of PHP; no telnet; terrible support; extra fee to setup mysql (30 bucks) and they set it up only beyond 30 day period so I could not test anything.
GNXonline
The list of complaints I had is endless. At signing up they told me wrong nameservers (which made the correct resolving even longer). I signed up for unlimited email accounts, but was limited at the beginning to 16 (and even after complaining I just got 99). The uptime was ridiculous (had in my last week with them 38 hours downtime). Their DNS often failed. Their support was very slow (either no answers or after 12 hours) and mostly replied that there are no problems and all other customers on this server do not have any complain. After all I just can recommend everyone to stay away from them.
Alexander
PS: Also had a bad experience with Powweb. Site was often down and they were quite slow in bringing it back up. After cancelling and telling my reasons for that they even asked whether I would stay for a free month.
Chicken 09-27-2001, 10:11 AM Just F.Y.I. this would be the second post of this type within a month, and I can't recall how many of this type have been posted in the past.
massive 09-27-2001, 11:12 AM really? Chicken or anyone else, would you happen to know the URL's for the previous threads? I'd be interested in reading peoples' past posts.
And FYI.
I guess you can never overstate the obvious for this case:

really? Chicken or anyone else, would you happen to know the URL's for the previous threads . . . . . .If you use the search function on this board, and enter key words like "suck", "beware", "horrible", etc. and click "Match partial name"; you'll come up with lots of reading material. ;)
massive 09-27-2001, 11:25 AM thanks!
Ericwenlong 09-27-2001, 11:27 AM There are a lot more than you could list. But posting them publicly may bring you trouble.

Posting what you think of any company won't bring you any trouble as long as the information is factual. If you are making things up to cause a company to look bad then that is slander and yes, you could get busted for that. But if you have the correct information and you, personally, were the one affected by it then there is not a single thing any company can do about it. Check out the following sites if you want to see what posting bad comments can do...
ecomplaints.com
epinions.com
planetfeedback.com
validsites.com
webassured.com
...I've personally used WebAssured and nothing ever came negatively to me of the comments I made about a now out-of-business hosting company.
Hope this information helps.

You are forgetting to mention the fact that all of these items are detailed in the pre-purchase FAQs. Bad enough you have to slam these people once, but over and over.....
So- in fairness to PowWeb- here is another post where you bash them. Only fair people get the whole story...

Update- MySQL setup was completed in about 20 hours. I am in my second week with them (not > 30 days as suggested above).

:D Yes- it is nothing personal (yet). I just get frustrated when people rant about something without giving the whole story. Yeah some of what he says is true- but they make that clear.
I don't think it is fair to PowWeb to be getting slammed for someone not reading what they are buying.

rinchin 09-27-2001, 03:39 PM Have a look at this
Beware of worldzone - a few threads below this
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=21535
how they choose NOT to answer specific points
however it is ur decision whether you will go or not go to them based on what you trust - past experiences or the all-new present promises and future claims they make
( see wz forums too)
The worst host I have been with is DTS-NET. I do not think the company is still online. The account they gave me was an empty folder. I did not have a cgi-bin, stats, or instructions. They did not give me the majority of the items that they promised me before signing up. Support was poor and difficult to understand. They deleted my site when moving servers. After they had deleted my files, they sent me an email saying I should back up my files. They never responded to my emails about not giving the items they promised and refunds.
I am not alone with my feelings of DTS-NET. If you lookup the company at hostsearch.com, you will find that all 6 reviewers rated it '1' on a scale of '1' to '10'. The titles of their reviews are, "TERRIBLE -- AVOID!!!", "awfaul", "Unhelpful", "Poor support, unreliable e-mail", "Avoid, avoid, avoid!", and "DTS-NET is a rip off!"
I've never had a problem with a host. :D
