Hey everyone
I've got a question about hosting yourself on your PC (using apache php, mysql etc). What determines how much bandwidth you get? Obviously space is what's on your hard-drive. Is bandwidth your interent connection or something esle?
Thanks
Jack

the amount of bandwidth you have will depend on your upload. anything above 256kb/sec is ok for a small site.

The amount of traffic you have is the amount of bandwdith your ISP gives you.
E.g. if you are allowed 20 gig/months by your ISP, then your bandwidth per month is 20 gig.
just make sure that your ISP allows you to run a webserver because some don't

Your in the UK so your bandwidth is not capped (yes we know ntl say it is, but hell i download 6GB a day and upload as much as 3GB and they dont say anythin) :P

Yes, alot of BT providers say they put restrictions on bandwidth but they dont really. I phoned them up because i was going to run a webserver and they said "no sir, there is no policing over this watsoever, we set this down just to warn users not to use over this and little people do" so they basiclly told me i can use as much as i like.
England is only really getting to grips with ADSL while the US are on much more powerful connections for the same price.

Your bandwidth is capped. If you can download about 6 Gb day and you max out your connection would I guess your connection is capped at about 512 - 768 Kbit, but you probably have unmetered bandwidth usage on your capped connection.
Most broadband connections are capped at something between 128kbit - 2mbit.
Uncapped 100 Mbit ADSL connections would be nice to have but is not possible to get :)

100mbit DSL of any type does not exist. ADSL officially can only reach 8mbit download (although Sweden have developed a way to push it past 20mbit). VDSL is around 50 - 60mbit maximum but it is still really only a trial technology. Dont forget though, that VDSL would be local bandwidth, not international.
FTTH is the way to go tbh but it can have nasty health effects if not insulated correctly (they dont seem to have any problems in Sweden though lol).
