View Full Version : How much bandwidth do we actually require?

I've heard many people say most sites don't take up to 2 gb bandwidth even.
I want to start up a site like www.virtual-hideout.net, a hardware review+news+case mod gallery site
Now if you click on About, he says the most visited section is cool case gallery.

How many hits do you think they get? I am guessing since there aren't that many case mod / review sites, I think they get at least 1000 hits a day.

The main page itself is 352kb in disk size. So that would be 300mb each there the bare minimum. I would guess at least 50 people would browse the gallery section and take up at least 1mb each. So that's 50mb. On average, I'm gonna assume they take 100mb.

So now that's 100mb + 350 mb. But don't forget, people will browse other sections. I'm gonna estimate, 600mb is used each day. Remember server sends that much and will receive as well. So total: 600mb I'm guessing.

One month = 600mb x 30 = 28000mb WtF?
Does this make sense?

So to operate such a site, am I gonna need one of those expensive US$ 50 plans?

Someone wanna tell me something?

I would start out with 1gb of transfer. You can always add more.

The main page is 352kb???!!!!@#@!$

I would suggest if you wish to have any visitors other than those on a T-1, you hire a web designer that understands a bit more about the correlation between bandwidth and design. Your heftiest page should never be more than 70 or 80kb, most *good* designers stick to 35-45Kb per page. When you factor those numbers into your bandwidth requirement equation, I think you'll find that 28GB/mo. is a bit excessive.

OK. Is that would you guys think... check this site out
www.hwextreme.com

It's a hardware review site. Think of an estimate of the amount of bandwidth they take.

Then, take a look at this pic...

I don't think the stats lie. Even for Nov 2000. PLEASE DONT TELL ME THAT'S NOT A LOT.

All I want is to create a site like www.virtual-hideout.net, www.maxreboot.com, www.gideontech.com with an online store and picture gallery like gideon and VH.

Someone wanna tell me something...

Most sites (speaking in general, not about the type of sites you are talking about) do not get 1000 hits a day. Many do, but there are many more that have far less traffic.

well i'll add my voice here since I happen to know a bit... :)

1) startup you're going to use very little bandwith. it could take months even years before you get any real repeat traffic where bandwidth becomes a concern. so don't worry yourself with that. bandwidth should be a side concern that you only worry about when it becomes a problem.

2) you should be more worries about server loads then bandwidth. you may be able to start out on a shared server and pay a little bit but you'll soon learn that it's server loads that cause the real problems! getting tons of hits to load images and view message boards can bring a weak server to its knees...

3) starting up a hardware site is tough! I know 2 personally that have gone belly up in under 6 months. just creating a "hardware" site doesn't guarantee sucess at all.

4) my friend runs a rather well know tech site dalantech.com and he's averaging 15 gigs a month. another thetechguide.com is doing about ~10...

5) why waste your time trying to start your own tech site when you could join an already established one that just needs more content and help? head over to thetechguide.com and get ahold of the webmaster. offer your services and i'm sure he'd take you up!

It has been proven. that any web site that takes over 8 seconds to fully load will lose users.

I like to use 6 seconds at 28.8.

And what Dexter said the correct thing. server load is alot more important than bandwidth.

352k. is crazy,you won't get 1000 hits that way each day,impossible.
What do you all put on your page to have 352k?

I think max a site should be 30-40k.,and even less.
My mainpage is about 35k and I still think it's a little too much.

And beware of some Javascripts and especially applets, these things can slow your site down immensely.

My sites are a big bigger than what u mention, but I think the results is worth those few extra seconds:)

Start on a Virtual server first.

As a rule of the thumb for me I count 1000 views a day as 1gb/month.

95% of sites do not get that much.
