Can someone please share experiences about discount-hosting.com ?
I know at $10 you should not expect for much - thats ok - I dont need any tech support or cgi but I do need php, sendmail and more importantly reasonably good speed and 99% + uptime.
Valuable host had a $19 per year plan but there are so many posts against them, worldzone has a $12 plan but no php with that probably and experience of a friend with them has been horrible while hostiva seems to be good according to posts here.Nuke to was compared to discounthosting but they have raised the price to $45.tera-byte has started a plan of $25 - but while their speed and uptime is good there are several posts which suggest something fishy about their bandwidth charges - also they never forewarn before adding 10 or 20 times the normal charge - thats not ccol.

My price range $10 or 15 to $30 - the cheaper and better the better
I did a search on discount-hosting - there was NO result - so please +s and -s .

If you want a discount host, a host *such as* affordablehost would probably be a good choice (one who offers comparable plans). Although the plans are inexpensive, they match the levels of features you should expect for $x/mo.

Now I'm not saying you can't offer 500MB and 20 gigs/mo for $10/yr., just that it doesn't leave much room for profit, and without profit, there are going to be deep problems down the road.

If a host wants to argue (meaning discuss an opposing opinion, not 'argue'), then that's fine, but I've done many calculations on what I would be able to offer for what price, and feel confident that I've seen enough to know what type of deals I can get. I've not been able to rationalize nor make $10/yr. 500MB/10GB/mo hosting work out (the 'numbers', as they say).

Instead, I've charged more and decided to keep the server so underloaded so no one will complain. Just my way, it ain't for everyone.

Point is that if you hope to get more than what you are paying for, you might not even get what you paid for. We've seen a lot of that lately, and sometimes a bargin is actually a poor move. You can buy a $100 car, but don't expect it to last 10 years and look like a $5,000 car. Typically, this just isn't the case, though a friend of mine got a good deal once (thing lasted 3 years! :D).

Good luck...

Chicken... AMEN.

Just a little addition. I know that when I was looking through the hundred or so companies that offered hosting, I was amazed at how low some of the prices were, an I mean REALLY low. I even lost my rational thinking, as I expected great support and great features for almost nothing... but when my site went down for a week, reality quickly bit me in the ass.

Web hosting is no different than anything else in life, you really do get what you pay for. I have ALWAYS found this to be true (well eBay is a different story).

Just my 2 cents :)

Yes, I've got a friend who is a firm believer in the $100 car. She buys 'em and drives them until they die. Usually this happens around 1-3 months, but she's gotten some good ones, heh.

Heh. . . . .I had a $17 car in 1975 I drove for two years. I only got rid of it after I loaned it to someone and they drove it into a tree. :(
Moral of the story . . . . "Never loan your website to someone. There may be a tree ahead."

Heh, $17 wow! I'll have to tell her about that. My apologies for the tangent, though if you read closely (and have a good imagination), you can relate it all to web hosting.

LOL. The way SoftwareRevue related that to webhosting is really funny. But damn $17 cars... I bet you can sale the parts / material of the car for more than the car itself.
How can a $17 car work for 2 years anyway? It's suppose to be like one of those disposable cameras.

I don't know about that. I saw numerous free ones on the side of the road from Alice Springs to Darwin. ;)

It would stand to reason any car for $17 (Even in 1975) wouldn't have been expected to make it out of the driveway.
The fact that I was able to drive 'this' particular one for over two years (as my only mode of transportation) is a testiment to the fact that you 'can' get a bargain.
But as I said, after spending $17 for a car, I would not have been upset had it fell apart before I actually got to use it.
Same with web hosting. If you purchase a plan that is far below industry standards in price, then you shouldn't be surprised if it never makes it out of the driveway. Or a couple blocks, at best.
If, however, it just keeps rolling along with only the expected minor oil changes and occaisonal flat tire that comes with it; then you are indeed blessed to have found it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make it seem like I offer packages to members. I don't. My small hosting mainly involves me tinkering around with stuff (without having to worry about signing up for packages) and hosting either people I've known from where I used to live many years ago, some contacts I've made in this area locally, and a random person who has asked.

I'd prefer to let any of the great hosts here have the business instead, as I just do it on the side (I actually teach 3rd grade, heh), and many of the people here do it *as* their job and can offer you better service and bigger packages. If you really have the desire to pay $20/mo. for 50 MB and 2 GB/trans/mo, then you let me know :D

In other words, post a request in the ad forum and you should get some schweet replies from the fine hosts here please.

SoftwareRevue: Don't tell me you didn't miss the car after using it for 2 years then losing it. I mean after 1 year, it should become part of you, right? You grow some love for it. At least that would be the way I feel. Call me a woman, but I love my stuff.
However, I don't think you can relate this to webhosting :D

As far as relating to web hosting. . . . . My original analogy still stands.
Some discount hosting companies are worth much more than they cost.
Some full priced companies are completely worthless.
Not so much different than cars.

Not to mention the "Battered Wife" thread Chicken dug up for you
