netscape 6 is buggy. My opinion anyway. It may just be that.

Don't know about Netscape, but Mozilla 0.9.2 through 0.9.4 work just fine with SSL so far. I don't recall exactly which Moz release Netscape 6.1 was based on, but I don't recall any particular SSL problems recently either... I've been using Mozilla (RH 7.2 beta) almost exclusively for the last couple of months, SSL and all...

Have you tried Mozilla, Opera, or Konqueror (eg, have you narrowed the problem down to being specifically NS6)?

<<EDIT>>

I figured out the problem. I had installed OpenSSL but not the OpenSSL-engine - I must have forgot

Thanks for all your help :)
