View Full Version : Threads that are moved
Mark_TVI 12-26-2003, 01:49 PM While I can certainly understand a thread that is started in the wrong section being moved, is it possible to leave one of those [moved] links in the original forum it was posted in for a short period of time? Obviously it's not necessary if there are no additional posts but it's tough to find the topics again after they are moved.
Steve Saw 12-26-2003, 01:54 PM If you're subscribed to the thread (especially the thread creator), the mover will post a "Thread moved" when it's in the new forum, sending the email to anybody subscribed.
The forums would be filled with "Moved:" links if we didn't opt to use the post-in-new-forum-which-will-send-out-email system.
Mark_TVI 12-26-2003, 02:22 PM It's not feasible to subscribe to all the threads that may be of interest or that I might have posted in, in fact many threads are more intersting to follow than to post in. Subscribing to all them would just add WHT spam to my inbox....:D
The moved links can be massed pruned in 24 hours (or whatever time limit is acceptable) so the forums would not be filled with moved links. There were two recent threads this happened to and I did notice that the moved links were used in the past.
Steve Saw 12-26-2003, 02:29 PM They're occasionally used, most likely on accident. My job is to make sure I check "Move thread without redirect link" ;)
If you see a thread that's selling a design in "Website and Graphics Discussion" and notice it's gone, it's probably been moved to "Templates/Graphics Offers and Requests". Probably not too hard to hunt down. Or a domain for sale in "Other Offers and Requests" when it belongs in "Domain Offers and Requests". Or a thread complaining about a web host in the Lounge; a programming question in the Web Hosting Discussion forum, etc.
But should a higher up be interested in the prune idea, I'm not going to vote another way :agree:
Mark_TVI 12-26-2003, 02:52 PM The most recent thread I was looking for had to do with off-site back ups for dedicated servers. It was posted in the "Dedicated Server Forum" and moved to the Community Reviews" forums. I'm not questioning why it was moved, it would just have been nice to be able to find it again without taking 30 minutes to do so.
If the Moved links are no longer going to be used I'll have to figure out another way to try and track threads I'm interested in following....
CrazyTech 12-26-2003, 03:03 PM I agree, it can sometimes be troublesome to find a thread after it's gone. While I understand it of course needs to be moved, I really don't like to have to subscribe to a thread to keep track of it(it would add up after a while). I think so long as it is not deleted, I shouldn't have to track something down. It doesn't hurt to leave a link up for a short time period when the thread is not advertising something.
The problem is not so much which forum as it is where in that forum. Quite often, the thread may be moved and then get buried under the new posts and that can make it harder to search for. The examples that Steve gave are not exactly the ones that I have in mind.
websterworld 12-26-2003, 05:15 PM Yap, its a bit of a bother...
I just search for all the posts I made, and find it...
Its a small pain for you, instead of a HUGE pain for the mods... its not what WHT can do for you! its what you can do for WHT! :usflag:
Mark_TVI 12-26-2003, 07:27 PM That's a great solution unless you didn't make a post in the thread you were interested in. I could be wrong here but I doubt it would be a huge pain to leave a moved link for a day or two. The pruning feature can clean them out globally and that is about a two click action and it doesn't take any extra actions to leave a link when you move it either.
Leaving a link might also be a good way to show people some of the newer sections that have been added throughout this forum lately...
CrazyTech 12-27-2003, 12:26 AM No offense, but give the mods some credit websterworld. ;) They aren't that lazy now. It's a matter of checking/unchecking a box. Heck, they could add someone to go behind them and check/uncheck if they needed to. :D
anon-e-mouse 12-27-2003, 12:58 AM If you that interested in a thread, no doubt you will remember the title, so it is easy to do a search. It is fine to leave a redirect on smaller forums where you might only move a few a day forum wide, but here you could have a dozen pointers per forum in one day, which pushes the threads in the correct spot to page two very easily.
CrazyTech 12-27-2003, 01:02 AM Well that's a good point, but perhaps if you limited the display to a few hours. The majority of us that are interested in threads usually stop by fairly frequently. I think something like 3-6 hours would be fair but not too much of a hurting on the mods?
anon-e-mouse 12-27-2003, 01:15 AM If there wasn't an auto turnoff of the redirect, it would be extremely time consuming for us to cover our tracks and remove it, even if we could remember all that we moved in one day. And not everyone is a frequent visitor, so a few hours maybe too short. You might see a thread before you went to bed (for those who do) and mentally think to check it "tomorrow", by which time it has gone anyway.
A lot of people know it is in the wrong forum anyway, so if you are interested, subscribe to it in the event that it would be moved, as you knew it probably would have been ;)
