I just installed Windows XP on my main office machine ... and I have one word .. WOW

I love Linux, and now fiddling with FreeBSD, they are the perfect OS's in the server room, but nothing I have seen on the desktop usingg either Gnome or KDE can even begin to compare.

It's a very eye pleasing interface, very clen and informative, not to mention that it's been up for 2 days now and it hans't crashed yet (big contrast to 2K that crashed every 3-4 hours when it first came out)

The Glint drivers of my GVX210 where available to XP, so that was a relieve, but they dont' seem to be at 100% yet as when I try to run a opengl application they sometimes go into a loop, but that's third party software, and I'm sure they will fix it soon (they allways do, 3dlabs is great there)

I have to take my (red) Hat to Micro$oft, they really done it this time.

I was in PC World the other day and had a quick go.

This is a public forum with small children around so I'll shut my cake hole ;)

It looks very MacOS-ish. Give me Mandrake with the KDE desktop over Windoze or a Spankintosh with CrapOS on it ;)

PS. Carlos, dont you have a Mac? :D

I've enjoyed my experience (hehe) with WindowsXP.

Right now I have to suffer with a crappy PC (333mhz/96mb ram - 3 years old this October). With Windows 98 (as well as 98se/Me, etc) I was running in the 80th percentile in CPU usage all the time. With Windows XP, I rarely go over 25% - even with PhotoShop 6 running.

Its been a blessing on this hunk of junk. I'm going to put together a new computer in March or so -- and I'm going to get WinXP Pro upgrade for the new one.

Its been great to me... :)

Wrong. W2K was NT 5.

XP is a combination of 98's games & multimedia and w2k's stability features.

And I'm running XP, but unless I told you - you wouldn't know.

Wrong? I'm running XP at the moment as well. And yes, if you were to visit my site I would know that you were running NT 5.1.

Check your user agent at this page: http://www.privacy.net/analyze/

For me it shows "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0b; Windows NT 5.1)"

Vortech to save the day.. J/K

Ok
There is 2 ver. so far of XP. Home and Pro.

Home more like 98/ME but still bases off windows core.
Pro more like Win2k as it has IIS 5.1 and also based off Win2k

So your both right.. It depends on the ver. you are running..

Any one know what the name of the new server ver will be. Like XP server any ideas?

p.s been runng XP since pre beta 1 and on final now.. :) Pro is much better then home is..

Windows XP is supposed to be thought of as a new era of the Windows OS kinda like Windows 95 was from 3.1. However, XP is based on the NT kernel.

Also, have I heard correctly that there will be a 64 bit version of XP?

I have been hearing this but have not seen any thing as of yet.. Maybe that is what the new server ver. will be... That would be nice..

XP both Home and Pro and Server version (out 2002) are based on Windows 2000 code, NT code if you like, with increase features and multimedia support. One of the aims of the XP vision was to merge to two seperate cores of Windows (eg. Windows ME and Windows 2000). Windows for home users upto now was built on DOS to some extent, programs had direct access to hardware and the core was essentially 95. That side of Windows has gone, although Microsoft have invested great deal of time in ensuring most of your old apps and hardware work.

XP Home and Pro both have the same 32bit w2k/nt core. Both will be able to run the same programs. Pro has slightly more features like IIS (for home web development), Personal Firewall, Internet Sharing, File Encryption etc... but thats about it.

The new server will .Net Server. It will include IIS 6 which is massive improvement over IIS 4/5, http connections will be handled by the kernel and the code optimized for serving large scableable websites rather than intranet sites. Also it will of course have the full .Net SDK built in, supporting ASP.NET, ADO.NET, C# (amazing language), VB.NET, FRONTPAGE.NET.

The machine it's runnign on it's a Dual PIII 866 with 2 gig of ram and dual display via a gvx210

the speed is great, and it's NT based, it installed over the 2K with no problems, only thing that was not compatible was easy cd creator 4

PS - this is the pro version, there will be a 64 bit version later on for the new intel CPU's

Are your drivers updated? I recently had to update my drivers for my graphics card -- I'm sure you knew this, but you can download the OpenGL update -- http://www.opengl.org.

There might be something released there that you may need to download...

Dunno... :)
Just thought I would help... :D

...http connections will be handled by the kernel...

With the kernel serving http requests, if someone crashes the httpd/kernel wouldn't the whole system go down?

Also, after having xp since rc1 was released I have noticed it has slowed down like every windows installation I've ever had. I recently cleaned up my harddrive, defragged, and installed more RAM but things are still not as fast as they originally were.

hey, wow, i'm actually seeing comments about ms
well, i'm windows 2000 now and am happy but it is taking up too much ram, do you think that xp takes up more or less ram, and would it load faster on a p2 333mhz?
oh, by the way my record on 2000 is 4 days and 6 hours, but i had internet problems so i had to reboot, i think windows 2000 is rock solid except it takes too much ram

im using windows xp pro final
upgraded from windows 2k

I love windows XP, its much faster (starting up and loading programs). And i believe it uses less ram than win 2k, although im not sure. I think a p2 333mhz could handle it without problems.

Yup.

When Microsoft put the video code into the kernel for NT 4.0, it caused a pretty severe stability problem.

So now, when MS puts the http code into the kernel, a hacker can cause the BSOD quite easily, given Microsoft's poor security in their software.

I've been hearing mixed reviews on XP. Can anyone tell me if it's any better over 2K? What does XP have that 2K doesn't? What does XP lack that 2K doesn't?

thanks

That 'activation crap' is just a better (for them, not better for you heh) way of enforcing the license that everyone used to ignore.

You mean the XP Product DeActivation feature that prevents you from moving your copy of XP from one computer to another without calling Microsoft?
