Hello all,
I am in the process of moving a site to PowWeb (which so far have been pretty good), and I am trying to install Ultraboard Personal 2.2??. I have installed this a couple of times before and never had any trouble.

However, even after "triple-checking" permissions, locations, upload types (bin/ascii)- I get the good old 500 Error when trying to run the install.cgi.

Error log "premature ending of headers" which I am learning is like the "access violation" in windows (meaning could be anything).

My thought is that PowWeb may not provide something that the install requires. I know it uses *.tar files for the install.

Any thoughts would be helpful, Thanks.

if i were you i would leave ultraboard alone - this project has been inactive for a long time - the site is left to die and you ain't gonne get any official support or bug fixes.

There are lots of PHP/MySQL based boards that are free and would outperform UB.. Its simplier in general to maintain PHP/mysql board and its easier on system resources to run PHP based board rather than perl based board.

niekas- you are probably correct, but I already paid for it and i am familiar with it. I was moving a site so was not really concerned at this time about trying something new. I don't get much traffic so it works for now.

I will have access to MySQL at Powweb, so I will be trying something in the long run. Thanks for your thoughts.

I did get it to install in the document root. Per Ultraboard doc one must do this when host does nmot permit binary files in cgi-bin. Waiting for tech support at Powweb to let me know it that is true.

hi, i use powweb
www.skinnynerd.com

I have a great comment about the piece of crap company

but, ill tell you my experience with them here as well so that everyone can hear their lame company

Background: I signed up with them 2 months ago, I couldn't really test if things would work because they delayed mySql so much that it exceeded my 30 day period. Not to mention you gotta pay US$30 to set up mySql (That's one way they make money out of you)

These premature script errors? Access denied etc.? hehe, dude, move out, don't waste your time. I've spent a lot of time trying to fix those problems. Every script I try installing I get extra problems because their system is poorly ridiculously configured.

First, make sure you set permissions to 755 for all .cgi scripts.
Of course that won't fix it, you will need to modify the files in many cases, like many files to make header #!/usr/bin/cgi or something like that check their FAQ.
Now, if that doesn't work, you complain, you wait for 1-2 days. They give you a vague answer - read FAQ, modify files, etc - they wont help you at all.

So this fruit modified the headers of 10 files for me and said he spent 10 minutes fixing the problem with PHP (NOTE THEY USE CGI VERSION OF PHP SO YOU HAVE TO ADD HEADERS)

Of course he didn't finish the job, there were about 100 php files. I had to modify all of those to work with the system, not to mention MANUALLY CHMOD files to 755 using cuteftp. It's quite pathetic trust me to chmod 1000 files in so many different folders with 56k connect.

I really don't think I have much more to say about them except they suck. OK? trust me, if you're still within the 30 day period, get out now. It's not worth it - CGI version of PHP, no mySQL, horrible support.

biatche- tell us how you really feel, don't hold back.

My biggest response is- "You get what you pay for"- I was thinking I just needed a cheap host to play with perl and things, and a place to put some domains. I fully understand what one would get / not get for $8 a months. I guess you were expecting more than one should for the price.

Although I haven't ordered the MySQL yet, I don't think the $30 setup is unreasonable. Considering some hosts don't even have it, or they charge $5 a month for it.

As for changing header statements- get used to it, almost every script I have ever used required some tweaking. It is the nature of the beast.

Also- some of the items you complain about (CGI PHP, changing headers, etc.) are clearly spelled out in the FAQs that can be accessed before signing up. Maybe some research would have saved you the pain.

Look- I am sure there are quirks, or "ridiculously configured" as you put it. But dude- $8 a month- what the hell do you expect. It is probably the "ridiculously configured" system that keeps the price so low.

My main site is hosted by Mindspring (Earthlink) and it costs me $30 a month (300 Mb/20 Mb BW/ 10-pop/NO database). I can host (4) sites at PowWeb for that price.

For me, so far, PowWeb is providing what I expected for the price. It suits my needs.

first, i got that response from them a dozen of times. second, it was my mistake to select that host. now, i make sure i research the exact details. and at that time, i had no clue about diff. between modular and cgi php. now that im telling you, u can take it into consideration. so I made a mistake not researching enough and not looking at FAQ. I did look but not all sections.
but, at the same time, you aren't listening. in fact, you are backing them up. and if you have done enough research, you will find LOTS of hosts that offer database plus normal php plus ftp accounts plus ... lots more
like palmversa.com or zeonhost.com

so you need to do your researching as well.

Thank you for your input.
you aren't listening.
I am listening- but when you go off on a rant about someone, and I go and see all the things your're bitching about were made known up front, it tends to make you seem like a pissed off customer who is ranting. And therefore your credibility with me is zero.
in fact, you are backing them up.
I am only speaking from my experience to date. Maybe 6 months from now I'll be as unhappy as you. But for now- I am speaking from my experience.

Fine- I don't spend hours digging for host. I came across this one and it works for me. I suggest you try one of them

so you need to do your researching as well.
I am not the one complaining- I read the FAQ, I know what I got and so far am happy.

I am not about to get in a pissing contest here with you. I have pretty much said all I need to (probably to much).

Again- just so people searching PowWeb find something.
- Ordered MySQL- was online about 20 hours after order.
- Was able to install vBulletin Lite which uses MySQL and PHP. Some PHP tweaking but all installed OK.
- Was able to install Ultraboard with MySQL as the database target. Went smooth and runs smooth. Was original topic
- Tried to install OpenBB which uses MySQL and PHP. Not so much luck with this one. However- the error is a 404 when a variable gets put in address bar. Unsure if related to CGI PHP run at PowWeb or not.

So- far- the deal seems to be a good one.

Actually Tera-byte offer 20GB bandwidth for 9.95/month and they have great support. I'm not sure about their CGI/PHP Bin though since I'm only an affiliate.
