View Full Version : Will cPanel for windows make you change from linux?
Flammable 12-21-2003, 12:39 PM When cPanel is released for windows will you convert from linux to windows? There are some advantages and disadvantages i can think of.
Advantages:
More software that can be used on windows to secure your server.
Less complicated than Linux (for majority)
Disadvantages:
Less Stable
Virus's
You have to pay
Do you think it would be worth the bother to transfer your hostee's to the new operating system?
Scout 12-21-2003, 12:43 PM I doubt it... Most people just choose Linux or Windows for server features... it also depends on each client's taste....
The control panel is a factor, but I don't think it be a reason for poeple to switch sides and overhaul all there clients... I mean Cpanel in LInux is working pretty fine....
At lest thats what I think.

No.

The real question is would the disruption of the changeover be countered by the benefit of the new system? In this case I would have to say no.

Not a chance...
Also "More software that can be used on windows to secure your server." - might be because it's necessary, whereas on linux it's not as much.

Neo3Net 12-21-2003, 08:53 PM Don't forget Windows costs a little more then linux :-P
Incognito 12-21-2003, 09:08 PM I wouldn't go to Windows because CPanel was now available for it. There are other forces which would drive one to start offering Windows-ASP, .net, MS SQL, etc. If offering Windows, you would just select the best Control Panel for your needs. If CPanel offered the same functionality for Windows, they offer for Linux, then I would select them. Otherwise, I stick to Helm and Ensim for Windows, although certainly HSphere would be my preference if I did a lot of Windows hosting.
Considering the Windows product is only at 84% and moving very slowly, I don't really think one has to worry quite yet.
inteltechs 12-21-2003, 10:46 PM not a chance. I feel a lot comfortable to run a unix or freebsd server than windows server.

Not sure where you get that list from but Windows is like a leaky boat when it comes to security. There is a reason crackers give less points for defacing a Windows box than thay do for Linux.
Windows is twice as complicated as Linux for hosting IMO.
No I would not switch and I doubt many people will, now if it has the features that Cpanel for Linux has then I would use it as my main control panel for Windows hosting. It may expand the windows market by making it easier for people to offer windows hosting to admin but doubt many people will switch, just more may offer windows as an option.
coight 12-22-2003, 12:53 AM Windows 2003 is pretty secure out of the box, but has bad memory leaks and really I prefer linux over windows. No we wont change and look how long its been in development who knows it might come out for Windows NT 4.
arelex 12-22-2003, 01:22 AM No way. I love linux. However, I will give it a try. For every 10 linux servers I have, I will have 1 Win server. Cpanel or No Cpanel. :)
Aushosts 12-22-2003, 02:02 AM I don't think you'll be able to just move to Windows.
I think it's going to have IIS + classic ASP, ASP dot NET, PHP, mySQL, MS SQL, etc
I think it'll take advantage of the great windows offerings such as ASP + dot net.
sprintserve 12-22-2003, 05:50 AM No I won't. Cpanel is just a software on top of the OS. The OS is a more important consideration and is the first priority. i.e. nothing changed with the release of a Cpanel on Windows.
After all, there's already control panels now on Windows.
chjcheng 12-26-2003, 01:05 AM NEVER. I wont move to windows unless my clients need a win hosting plan.
why pay for a win server lisence while there is a free linux OS ? :\
Reddrake 12-26-2003, 02:51 AM A Free linux os isn't staying much these days... Red Hat *Waves to freedom*
Why would anyone want to switch to windows? Don't we get enough of that for PC users running it?
Yeah ASP and that is "OK" However I have not found much use, might be better just to get a reseller account..
Why would cPanel even bother with windows? Waste of time to me, they should keep doing whats at hand and improve support a bit... [Ok maybe alot ;)]
