Hi,

I am now in a position (and forced to by Donhost!) to take the pluge and get our first dedicated server.

I think i have decided (mulitplicity at epik.net) on the provider but am now have second thoughts on the spec for the machine.

I originally planned to go for quite a high spec (PIII 1000mhz, 512mb RAM, CPanel, WHM). I was planning on around $250 a month,

I am now wondering wether to go for a lowers spec and therefore cheaper server ($100 - $150??) and then in a few months getting a second one.

What are your views on this, considering i have limited experience and limited budget.

Your urgent help is appreciated as Donhost have started to randomly deleted the accounts I have on my reseller account and I dont want to see my hard work so far go to waste.

Thanks.

I say two cheap servers better than one... and use one to backup the other.

In fact - I suggest going with two cheap SITES - not just servers. Run your own DNS servers (your two systems)... that way when you have an outage - you can control things pretty quickly.

This protects not only against technical problems but all too common billing mistakes, human error, etc.

What spec machine will be suitable?

Also what do you mean by having two cheap SITES?

How much bandwidth are you using on your reseller plan each month and what was the point when they started deleting accounts?

I wouldn't go for cheap servers if I were you..... From my experience, "you get what you pay for."

If you are serious about the webhosting business. Invest for high end servers where they can hold lots of users and more system resources where you clients will not complain about slow quality.
