Hi,

I guess we could do with a few more moderators, we used to have a few but I think they've vanished now. Anyway, if you're a God and would like to have moderator permission added to your status then send me e-mail, with a little about yourself and if you any connections with hosting companies. I will moderate the board as much as I can but due to timezones it doesn't work very effectively. Another benefit is that you choose your own status line :) and you can :uzi: spam.

I'd love to be a mod, but i'm just too quiet.

Matt,

I think it would be helpful if you outlined the duties and responsibilities of moderators. For instance, as the need arises, can they:

ban users
move discussions to other forums
delele single posts and entire discussions
close discussions

any other duties?

Learner

Yes Matt... Duster made a good suggestion.

It would be useful if you outlined all the responsibilities you expect from your future moderators.

I am almost 10 hours ahead of your time zone. I would be interested to be a moderator if it helps, but I would like to know in advance what is expected... so that I may be able to make a decision on this.

I think that all of the "gods" have connections to hosting, except for Chicken =)

Chicken

I'd love to do it Matt, as you can see I have little else to do... firing off an email. Connections... connections? We don't need no steenkin' connections.

VOTE CHICKEN - WHT MODERATOR 2000

As moderator I will:

ban users (MUH-WAH-HA-HA)
move discussions to other forums (see above)
delele single posts and entire discussions (see above)
close discussions (only if they relate to Alabanza, hee hee)
end world hunger
provide the vittles (B.Y.O.B.)
run around nekkid

Any special requests?

YES! Don't run around nekkid (or at least turn off your camera). I don't want to see any plucked chickens. :emlaugh:

run around nekkid going "paaakak puk puk" would be a better idea ;)

Me is a GOD too.. I guess its time for me to do some :uzi: and :smash: and flamethrow to all the spammers, out there who dare to enter the Dominion of WHL.

Bleep, what is a God with out his godily powers. :bawling: The dream would be true only if Matt gave me the powers.

Chicken won't ban you until you start acting COCKY around here :D

You get my vote for WHT Moderator 2000, Chicken... if you promise to make sure to keep your Uzi loaded and aimed at the heavy regular slammers !!!!!!

However, a little... just a wee little bit... slamming could be tolerated!!!

<whisper> I hope BC misses seeing this post :D

A warning could be privately issued by email to the slammer concerned before taking any action though... just an impractical thought :)

Acutally I kinda really like Matt's open policy in moderating this forum. Let things be as they are until things really go out of hand!!!

You know... after all the internet is all about free speech... and all that :)

learner,

With al due respect, this issue has nothing to do with free speech. That's a red herring. Any forum administrator has the right to set rules for the use of the forum. Asking or requiring that people follow those rules or go elsewhere has nothing to do with free speech.

In the U.S., the First Amendment refers to Congress not passing any laws that abridge it. That doesn't mean that anybody can say anything on any topic anywhere they choose, either face to face to in cyberspace.

A lot of people, especially spammers, like to mention freedom of speech when, in reality, the issue at hand has nothing to do with it.

If someone goes to a meeting of a chess club, the club is not bound to hear them talking about checkers, backgammon, or anything else. There has been no abridgment of their freedom to speak. It just isn't appropriate in all circumstances.

I nominate Chicken and BC. After all, they probably don't have anything better to do than to hang out here. :)

BC
09-27-2000, 06:52 PM
Geez, thanks Annette! :D

Seriously, I actually don't have any connection to any hosting companies whatsoever. Yes, I have a connection to an e-commerce company, but that's it.

Matt, expect to see an e-mail in your box soon :)

And I'll second Chicken's nomination too.

BC and Chicken would make swell moderators... either one of them (if not both) are in here most of the time anyway... a real important thing expected of a Moderator, I bet.

So BC, what's your voting pitch? Chicken has already made his :D

Learner

BC

Well, since Chicken's decided to go the Al Gore route.... Hmmm... I'm left with nowhere to go except :

Kill Windows!

Hmmmmm... OK. That was very useful.

Alrighty then, here's a good pitch :

1. I guarantee all companies trying to post even a hint of an ad will be *cough**hacked* on and banned with one strike only. They should have read the rules, and ignorance is no excuse. The :uzi: will be my main weapon.

2. I'll work with Chicken to ensure a clean, user-friendly, politically-incorrect forum. Oops, did I just say non-PC? :D

3. Once you reach a certain level of posts, I'll moderate the 'status' line to something of your choice! :D Instead of just 'Web Hosting God', you can become 'Shiva' or 'Aphrodite' or.... or... uhmmm...

4. Just work to ensure WHT remains the way it always will be!

===========================================
"If you can't beat 'em, then join 'em."
Vote Chicken and BC for moderators 2000!

By the way, congrats on your reaching the half-a-millennium mark!!! Won't be surprised if you touch the millennium mark by the eve of the real millennium :D

I have a new campaign slogan for Chicken.

Vote for Chicken. He'll cook your goose (if you put your plug on the wrong place). ;)

*lmao*
well it *seems* true. I know I've been wasting a hell of a lot of time here since I joined up and those two beat me to the punch 8 times out of 10 (which makes BC even sadder as we share the same time zones) :)

But I throw my vote at both of them too. They both have the combination of insane addiction to this forum AND the right attitude for a moderator. (ie. childishly vindictive and cruel at times, but generally happy to help out).

I feel like voting for myself, but it's design day today (coding was yesterday), so it's all Bourbon and EXTREMELY loud darkwave/gothic/industrial music all day and night. (think Hemmingway in black *lol*) One down, three to go :)

Anyway, more reading then back to work...

quick addition:

whoever gets to be moderator(s) should bump up the ratings again.... I'm a *god* now, and don't credit it for a second. How about a sliding scale? For instance, GOD status *really* should be at around 400 considering the people here at that level and their experience. As time goes on, increase it slowly (maybe if someone shows exceptional ability, have their posts 'bumped up')

Off topic I know but worth considering huh?

Actually, I agree on that topic Greg - I might take it up with Matt as to bump it up further. I knew I miscalculated somewhere when I originally drew up the figures... :look:

Learner

Plus perhaps an addition to the top title: Web Hosting Super God offered only on MERIT... ie. a good number of helpful and informative posts. The moderators could have the power of deciding who gets this SUPER title...

That way younger forum members have feel an increasing urge to be extra helpful as well... which will only improve the quality of this forum in the near future.

Do consider this too when you talk about it with Matt. this forum is doing quite well right now. I hope it even gets better... faster :)

*lol*

well you gotta remember Matt has to work within what the script will let him do :) I had some nifty-ass suggestions, but due to the past few week working with these things (with no CGI programming knowlegdge) there's only so much you can do...

Hmm... a proposal of sorts.. This forum is a winner. Maybe someone with a GREAT custom script could donate it with branding to Matt so he could customise - a bit of a win/win thing maybe?

Greg Moore
http://www.akashik.net

Learner

Greg, I don't think a CGI script would be necessary in this case... especially if the moderators themselves decided on this. They could very easily have this under control with a few keystrokes in less than a minute.

Or perhaps I am mistaken?

After a long day of campaigning, Chicken retires to zzzzz land. Although he would like to be able to 'man the boards' into the night, sickness prevents consiousness after 10 p.m.
