I was always curious about this. Who here is a webhost to pull in some extra cash per month, and who chose this a the primary source of income?

Side job for now.

I also do web design, forums/boards installation etc...

Mainly web design, and multimedia presentations on CDs/DVDs for companies etc... where the real money is...

The web hosting industry is my main source of income. Although, I am not a host.

If I wasn't making 5k+ a month, I'd suggest getting a side job

I'm still not sure how one can run a 24/7/365 business on a part time basis. Even if they hired out for all the necessary support they would need I can't see there being enough profit to maintain that arrangement for very long,. This poll shows that half the people voting in it run a web hosting business as a part time job.

Amazing....

With the exception of a small web design firm that also offers hosting as part of their packages, ditto what Watcher said.

Anyway, full time here. Web hosting is not the only aspect of my business since we offer a full range of services, but my company is my job.

I have my fulltime job and a very small hosting biz. I have a reseller account for my hosting. I do not do any advertising, and its all word of mouth. I primarily host small businesses. (ma & pa shops) All they want is a website. Some not even email. I never hear from them either. They just send me cheques in the mail. I call or email them once a month to check up on them. Thats my target. Small businesses who want a website, but not a clue on how to do it. I can charge a little more, offer a better service, and have a relationship with them. They like the fact they can see me, talk to me, shake my hand afterwards.

I am sticking with the local market. I have not gotten a signup over the web, because I can not compete with the saturated market, and the extreme low costs, but I can compete with the local market.

Thats my 2 cents.

Greetings:

I founded our parent company in June 1995 working it part time, and then went full time the 1st business day in May 1997.

Part time, btw, still meant 40+ hours per week for the business.

Thank you.

IntraHost just had its 4th birthday party the other day. We incorporated on December 15th, 1999. That said, it's been 4 years of part time work.

While I'm sure I could do full time and grow easily, I've had other arrangments so I was not able to work a full 40-80 hour/week hosting job. So that's forced me to keep the business small and managable. Works well though, a little side income never hurt anyone.
