Following the completion of its beta test, Aborior’s Simplex Database has now been officially released. Simplex Database is a three pronged CGI script, providing a simple and portable database appropriate for most webmasters, tools for creating your own custom web applications, and a collection of easy to use pre-made applications for your site.
Its versatility allows Simplex to be deployed for such applications as form handlers, sign up systems, guest books, mailing lists, user polls, banner rotators, news systems, online directories, message boards, member lists and almost any other dynamic, web-based application.
Simplex Database is written in Perl with its database structured in a set of random and sequential access files - designed to work for anyone on a server with CGI access. For increased performance, Simplex can be used as an interface to more powerful SQL database systems, with MySQL supported at this stage, and ODBC support planned. It supports such functions as automated e-mailing, form processing, file uploading and downloading, registered user access, flood protection, form validation, data processing and IP address restriction. It also includes manual backup features, search engine fronting and database conversion utilities to ease administration. At the heart of the software is a powerful templating system for producing dynamic web pages.
Many high quality, pre-made applications are distributed with Simplex that allow any user to rapidly deploy their chosen application with very little work. Once Simplex is installed, deployment of these applications is as simple as uploading files to a web server. The pre-made applications are easily set up, and may be tweaked or overhauled using Simplex's development tools to fit the user’s individual needs. These pre-made applications allow the use of Simplex in place of the many scripts that were previously necessary, and sideswipe the headaches of CGI script installation.
Seven pre-made applications are currently being distributed with the script, including a mailing list, guest book, link manager, news manager, random content manager, web counter and user poll. More applications are being worked on, including Encore Web Forum II, which will be based on the system; it is due towards the end of the year.
A free version of Simplex, SimplexLite, is available. The full version is priced at $120.00 (US) for an owned licence and $80.00 (US) per year for a leased licence. The Simplex Community forum is also available for support issues, questions and answers and just general discussion with users and developers of the software.
Aborior is also offering quite a nice affiliate reseller program aimed at web developers, hosts, web service providers and any other interested parties. The program allows you to purchase owned licences at a discounted rate of $80.00 (US) for resale to clients or otherwise. We are open to negotiation on special arrangements, particularly web hosting providers wishing to offer the software to clients.
