View Full Version : Top dedicated server hosts
WebBloom 09-22-2001, 06:14 PM It seems like a lot of the questions regarding hosts are about a relatively new host with extremely cheap prices and whether or not you can trust them.
I thought I would go at this with a slightly different angle. Who are the hosts out there that offer dedicated server solutions (Linux or FreeBSD) that are considered the best.
Not necessarily the best price but the ones with the most stable connections and an excellent track record that have been in the business for a long enough time that there is no longer a fear of them disappearing or going under.
Thanks for any suggestions.
creid 09-22-2001, 10:38 PM Ventures Online!:D
Dylan 09-22-2001, 10:56 PM When you find one, let me know :D
catalog.com seems to have good deals.
pwebtech.com is a good dedicating hosting provider.
mahinder 09-23-2001, 03:30 AM 1. colossus.net
2. rackspace.com
3. verio.com
4. hostpro.com
i have eye on these companies from more then 3 year and are solid rock companies i have ever seen. There must be more but i only know or at the moment can remember.
certify 09-23-2001, 02:00 PM I go for catalog.com
Tech support so far is superb.
Craig 09-23-2001, 02:12 PM we use site5.com and they are amazing.
I posted this on the other thread.. ill put it here also.
We have used site5 for around 4months.
We had a couple of problems with the server to start with - which we found was faulty ram, i emailed them and then next day it was replaced.
Now the server is running fine.
Vince, one of the admins is a great guy, ask him anything and he would help you out.
They do have great support, nac.net have been OK but latley have been a few problems but they seem to be better now.
They helped with the move from our old host to the new one guiding us each step of the way.
they are not the cheapest in the world but you get what you pay for. We have got this and more.
Hopet hat helps.
Craig
ps. i take it none of you watch red dwarf.. thats where the quote was from
Dylan 09-23-2001, 04:08 PM Craig, couldn't you have come up with a better example?
And is anybody receiving email notifications?
Dexter 09-23-2001, 05:41 PM I'll 3rd the vote for catalog. been with them almost a year now (october 15 to be exact) and they've been a great host. other than some network issues early on which i haven't seen since then they are top notch.

Post edited, sorry. Was just bringing some humor to my weekend, heh.
I think email notifications are off... maybe to try and save bandwidth

Instead of guessing, please ask. I doubt this is the reason, but anyway, back on topic por favor.

no offence meant, but from what you just said, what would have been the point of him asking when you just said that you didnt know, and being a mod as well should mean that you know why
:D
Chicken 09-24-2001, 12:40 AM Yes you are right, what is the point, it is better just to guess since I, someone who doesn't admin the forum, should know.
It was my fault for commenting on this, so let's get back to the point (reposted below). My apologies to WebBloom.

WebBloom 09-24-2001, 11:58 AM I've been slowly going through the sites and looking at all of their offerings. Catalog.com definitely has some nice offers.
These sites are exactly what I was looking for. Could you guys also list a few that offer FreeBSD? I haven't seen too many hosting companies that support this OS but from what I've been told it's a lot more stable then Linux.
Thanks again for the list of hosts.

Can't you request to have FreeBSD installed for you? Instead of them popping in the Red Hat install CD, have them pop in the FreeBSD CD and run through a similar install. :)

I always assumed that if they didn't mention FreeBSD that they couldn't install it. That's a good point though. Definitely worth requesting.
Dexter 09-25-2001, 01:48 PM well i don't know for sure but atleast in catalogs case they had no problem installing redhat 7 free of charge back when it was first released way before they officially offered it. so if you ask i'm pretty sure they wouln't mind installing freebsd for ya.
delemtri 09-25-2001, 06:52 PM I know nothing about support - but I have an extensive list of some top dedicated hosts that I compiled a while back. I can post it here or email it to you if you'd like. :)

That would be great. Could you also tell me how these hosts made your list?
Thanks

delemtri 09-26-2001, 07:19 PM They made the list by my finding their webpage and deciding that their prices weren't way too high. ;) Message was too big so here's a link - http://www.delemtri.com/dedicateds.html :)

Voodoo Web 09-27-2001, 04:08 AM How did you measure the speed of each provider?
I'm looking for a similar server and your list give me a very good overview of existing offers.
Another provider on my list is ezzi.net, can you help me to compare the speed of them to the others. I'm from Europe so I can't really compare it.
- domi
delemtri 09-27-2001, 08:26 PM There's no specific order. And the speed was just speed in MHz. :)
