Is there any software outthere for a Windows 2000 server that will allow me to "password protect " a directory on a website?

I know many hosts offer this but I have not found out how they do it; I would like a software that is preferably web based and that I can easily add/remove users and point them to specified directories. This is not for FTP but it is for Web Access.

It will be used mainly for "protected" sections of a site in which only "members" will be allowed to access that portion of the site. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make this happen??

you can protect direcrory with the help of control panel which is provided by hosting company for windows.
