edit: Err, sorry, I meant domain registration, not hosting. Too bad I can't edit topics.
Not sure if this is the right forum to post to be register.com is offering domain hosting for staples customers at only $1 for the first year. After your first year is up, feel free to move registrars :)

I just added 5 more to my list of growing domains...

It's not as good a deal as it looks on first glance. To transfer the name you have to buy an additional year from Register.com for $35. So, at $35 + $1, divided by two, the yearly cost exceeds that of many other registrars. So, it's a deal sort of like "unlimited bandwith."

That makes about as much sense as a bag of elephants. Yeah, just before I decide to switch hosts, I pre-pay another year, *then* transfer. What the sam-hill???

I don't see any such statement at register.com. Can anyone provide a reference?

Go to the link in the first post, click on "transfers," then click on "transfer registrars," and read the FAQ until you reach this provision:
"How much does transferring registrars for my domain name cost?
The current registrant (i.e., registrant) of the domain name will be required to contract an additional 1-year registration term with register.com for the domain name being transferred. The $35 fee is payable by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover."
Sorry about not posting more detail earlier. I guess in my business you start finding and reading fine print reflexively.
Best regards.

Ahh, thanks! Well, I went to the finer print at the bottom of the page pointing to the disclaimer, etc. Didn't find the reference in any of those pages. It's a shell game, eh?

Heh,
That sounds similar to the infamous offering:
"Get a free $something *"
* = When you purchase Internet service from MSN for 4 years.
I'm sure everyone here has seen that in one form or another. :D

The $35 fee sounds more like if you're transferring a domain from another registrar to them. $35's their standard rate for one year of domain registration, and any time you switch registrars you have to extend registration by at least a year anyways. So it seems pretty standard to me.
I'm not aware any registrar can force you to register another year with them when you transfer a domain name away from them.
