DynastyHost 09-26-2000, 08:39 PM VDI DialTone RackSpace tera-byte cbaker17 09-26-2000, 09:10 PM Also communitech.net is supposed to be preety good Félix C.Courtemanche 09-26-2000, 09:26 PM communitech was flamed several times... It may be based on some real problems? Look in this board for more info. handyman 09-26-2000, 10:28 PM Originally posted by DynastyHost VDI DialTone RackSpace tera-byte Thanks for the information! I've been surfing around this forum for a few days and I see the acronyms VDI and DI used a good bit. Just so I am sure, what does VDI stand for? JTY 09-26-2000, 10:32 PM VDI is Virtual Development Inc. and their website is http://www.vdi.net/ if you didn't know. Duster 09-27-2000, 12:19 AM The problems with Communitech seem to be that 1. They notified hundreds of shared server customers that their accounts would be closed in 24-48 hours (it varied) unless they made plans to move to a dedicated server 2. Communitech seems to have grossly inflated the amount of bandwidth usage reported to many of these customers as part of the justification for their actions. One gal who posted here reported her real usage, once she got a dedicated server elsewhere, was less than a third of what Communitech had reported. Though that wouldn't seem to have a direct bearing on co-locating with them, would you really want to do business with cheats and liars? If they lied about that, they could lie to you about something else. By doing business with disreputable companies, it rewards them for cheating others. cbaker17 09-27-2000, 12:42 AM THanxs for letting me know guys, I know awhile back ago I heard plenty of good comments but it looks like any more they too have turned "Alabanza" on us :) handyman 09-27-2000, 08:58 AM Typical user - I was going to vdi.com, not vdi.net, but I did find their website! VDI...well, I am looking for co-location, not dedicated server. They are all about Linux dedicated servers. They only mention co-lo on their site once. There is no page for co-lo at all and absolutely no pricing. I guess I will have to call their sales people (yuck). Why does picking a host feel like playing pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey (and I end up feeling like an ass)? Onward and upward! They offer good plans, don't know them off the top of my head, and good support. They also have a GREAT forum of users that share ideas and problems, yes they like everyone else have problems. Félix C.Courtemanche 09-27-2000, 03:22 PM ... some have more problems or more often than others though ;) stat_man 09-27-2000, 05:09 PM The ones with the most problems are always the loudest, with their vast amount of clients you will obviously get more discontent, then with a small 100-250 user base. Most of us a communitech think they are really well done, and their prices are really good too! Support excellent! Racin' Rob 09-27-2000, 07:09 PM Today, I just cancelled 9 accounts with Communitech.net. I have been with them since Feb '99. There support, customer service, billing, and attitude towards theri customer has dropped from Good-Very Good, to absolutely terrible during my time there. Average server load is over 2.00 more than it is under 2.00. Too many accounts fighting for those precious system resources. I got a dedicated server from catalog.com last week. I have had no problems so far, but I am only using a small portion of the resouces so far. I narrowed my search down to catalog.com and dialtoneinternet.com before deciding to go with catalog.com. I'm far from a linux guru so I am learning as I go. Bogdan 09-27-2000, 07:28 PM Originally posted by MikeA CCCCCOOOOOOOLLLLLLL!!!!!!! Alabanza has been dropped from the good dedicated server company. Awsome. Their perfect little company image is now tarnished. It's just unbelievable how fast it happened... ehh? diyoha 09-27-2000, 10:11 PM In less that a week. Just goes to show how one mistake can be super costly GeorgeC 09-28-2000, 02:00 AM My favorite dedicated host is definitely Rackspace. Great servers, even better support. MattF 09-28-2000, 08:05 AM Hi, Maxim.Net have excellent prices. I know of a company who hosts with them and is quite successful. You can also check out the big players if you need more than a T1. If you don't believe what others have posted here, then you might want to read this c|net article about CommuniTech: http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1007-200-2402168.html?tag=st.ne.1002.bgif.ni stat_man 09-28-2000, 12:25 PM I will always believe what I have expeienced over what others, whom I don't know say they experienced. I know how my situation is with Communitech. It is awesome, they are fair, quick, and they are very good about support, even though I never signed up for a support contract. I have no clue about their virtual hosting. But they are the best dedicated host I have had. I can read bad things about them but I really can't think of anything that can be said to outweigh my past 2 excellent years with them. Now prior to them I have been at a few horrible places, I skipped around the previous 2 years from about 3 or 4 dedicated ost providers, I hated many of them. But Communitec.net has been great! I can read bad things about them but I really can't think of anything that can be said to outweigh my past 2 excellent years with them. When I signed up for virtual hosting with them, they had 3 servers for virtual hosting, now they have 20. They are trying to run their company with the same staff and support system as they did with 3 servers. Their support and staff has not grown anywhere near what was needed to maintain their level of service. Dedicated vs. Virtual hosting can not be compared. With Didicated servers, you do all the server administration yourself. All they do is provide the power and Internet connection. So the majoirity of the support that lacks in their virtual hosting, is not applicable for their dedicated hosts. CT seems to have a hidden agenda of getting rid of every virtual account that uses a certain level of CPU or bandwidth usage. Either go dedicated or leave NOW, is their answer. CT is the 5th different virtual hosting company that I have been with over the past 4+ years. Over a period of the past few months, they are the 2nd worst of the bunch. But this is my opinion based on my experience with them. Your's may be different and you are entitled to it. That is the point of checking on references If I contact 10 clients of a company and 9 of them have bad experiences with that company, and one is have a great experience. And there are news articles about the company confirming the bad experiences of the 9 clients. It would be pretty ignorant of me to sign up with that company. Not matter how great an experience that one person has, the odds are that I will have a bad experience. Now if I had money and time to burn (which no business does) then it might be feasible to test the waters ... but there are so many other good hosts with glowing reviews that it would only make sense to go with them. later David [Edited by diyoha on 09-28-2000 at 12:55 PM] stat_man 09-28-2000, 01:37 PM Actually over the past 2 years their support staff has more then tripled. I still work with the original people that were there when I started, because they have done so well, that is why I get responses back in a flash. As far as references. I can't sit back an listen to bad references with out making mine perfectly clear. Communitech is a really good value for the money. Again, i don't claim to know anything about their virtual host, really I think with virtual hosting you are setting ytouself up for problems. Afterall when companies put hundereds sometimes over a thousand users on a box, it is just a problem waiting to happen! |
