Hello All,
This week has been like a ride through hell for me. A week ago my raq3 crashed and was down for two hours and after a reboot it was fine. From that day onwards it crashed daily and last time it was very bad. My host told me that the server was beyond repair and had to be formatted but then when I offered some money they got it online for me at least. Now the server is running and everything seems to be fine but I don't know how long it is till it crashes again. I am thinking of moving the sites from my current host to rackshack. But i'm scared that the data will be lost or something bad will happen. I don't know how well this proccess works. Some people have told me I will have to create all the users again on my RackShack server.
This is the problem as I have more than 400 users and 250 sites on this Raq3 and recreating the users on the Rackshack server again by hand is an almost impossible task.

I and posting here in hope that you guys will help and give advice on how to move the sites and users without any loss? I hope to learn from those who have already been through this process.

Well I would say first off you raq was probley crashing because there is too much for it to do. 250 sites on a raq3 is not a good ideal. If you didn't back up your users accounts I don't think there is a way to get them restored quickly.

On a lighter not I can create you a quick script that will create all the domains on your server quickly. I think it would take you about an hour to do all the domain setup and dns entrys. If your interested email me or call me.

Yes thats what everybody tells me but i don't understand why.
I am no expert but this is an idea that I had:

Why should the number of sites that I have determine if the server is being overloaded? Does'nt the amount of traffic the server has affect the server load?

I have very low traffic websites and my monthly bandwith usage is about 1.8 GB. Will my server still be overloaded if the traffic is very low but I have a lot of websites?

tymonhall,
I have added you to my AOL IM. Do you use ICQ? if yes then send me your ICQ#

Cobalt has got a migration utility to restore one server to a other.
It can backup a raq3 and restore it to a raq4.

Some backupscripts works with this thing.
I have no idea if it really works, but you might want to take a look at:

http://www.cobalt.com/products/raq/migration.html

Good luck !

thanks, i know about the migration utilty but want to know if it actually works or not. and if it does then to what extent does it work?

i have been using the Raq3 for about an year and know its GUI very well. but i am not very good at telnet.etc how do i transfer the domains such that they are exactly the same as on the old server.
I need to transfer the following exactly as they are on my old server:
- Web Pages & Images (for each site)
- CGI Scripts with correct permissions (for each site)
- E-mail accounts including forwarding (for each site)
- Usernames and Password (for each site)

250 sites and onlu 1.8 gigs of BW dont sound right to me.. even if they all are low traffic sites..

From what i have read the migration util works great..

Yes,
it is amazing is'nt it? :)

Most of my websites are personal website and don't recieve more than 10 hits a day.

Anyway back to the migrattion util. It works great but does it do all the things that I require?

I need to transfer the following exactly as they are on my old server:
- Web Pages & Images (for each site)
- CGI Scripts with correct permissions (for each site)
- E-mail accounts including forwarding (for each site)
- Usernames and Password (for each site)

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but did this migration utility work for you? If not, or if you didn't use it, what did you do?

Any info greatly appreciated!

There is a tool that I am using to back up my servers that uses that migration util. I have had to restore one of my servers but the utility didn't do everything it was suppost to so I ended up having to manaully restore everything. So I guess my answer is no. It saved the data but I had to manully rebuild all of the sites becasue it didn't store the script it uses to restore the sites.
