Hello all,

Look at this thread below that I found on RS/EV1 site where someone reports that RHEL 3.0 does not have MySQL installed, some issues with php, etc. etc.

Read first 4, 5 posts in this thread.

http://forum.ev1servers.net/showthread.php?threadid=37970

May be your posts will help newbies like me to understand if we really need RH Enterprise or Not?

Thanks for expert comments.

Please explain what really is the problem?

PS. ServerMatrix can also respond what they think of this situation and how people can get php, MySQL issues resolved if any.

RH Enterprise is new while RH 9 has been around the block for a while. RH 9 is tested in real life environment, RH Enterprise has not been in the block long enough for that to happen.

RH Enterprise does mean a new beginning for Redhat and as such would probably include new features which may or may not work with other 3rd party solutions.

Personally, I do not care about RH Enterprise and would stick with RH 9. Since it is working why break it ?

Is there anything in your requirements which would work with RH Enterprise only ? If not, there is no real reason to go with RH Enterprise.

Thanks for response.

I really don't know if we 'must' have to have RH EL 3.0

Well my developers have developed our dating network sites in php/MySQL and told me that Linux is the best and cheapest OS to run them on. I have also been told that RH ES 3.0 has lots of features and more "stable/secure" than other OSs especially other Red Hat Linux versions.

Plus the RH 9 has EOL in April, 2004.

Plus most hosts have now started to offer RH Enterprise 3.0

So thats why I want to go with RH ES 3.0

Any suggestions if some other OS has better features / functionality and more secure to hacker/DDOS attacks? And of course free or cheap:)

Thanks.

Personally, I am sticking with RH 9 because RH ES is just too new.

As to whether it is more stable or secure, it probably is untested yet. It hasn't been given the real life environment for testing yet. Typically, I never go for a x.0 version until about 6 months down the road.

Although RH 9 will be EOL in April 2004, Redhat did mentioned that they will unofficially support it for another 5 to 7 months. After which the updates will be done through Fedora.

If you want a paid update, Progeny is offering it for $5/mth which should probably not pinch the pocket too much. http://www.progeny.com/products/transition/index.html

RH 9 is stable in my books so I don't see any reason to upgrade.

I see no reason in switching to RedHat Enterprise just yet. Another thing is perhaps trying FreeSBD? This runs very nice and is free. However if you pust keep linux, RedHat 9 is fine. Very stable. Also, i'm not sure how well some of the control panels work with it yet. I'd give it some time to adjust and have redhat get all the bugs worked out in it. When it gets used more and more and people are liking it, then perhaps you can consider trying it. The other thing you can do is just run it on a test server from a provider who offers it for free. I hope this helps..
