View Full Version : Canaca.com--AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE
johnthomas 12-11-2003, 09:41 AM I signed up for two domains with Canaca.com, and both of them are having problems with the server software 'forgetting' the MySQL userid/password. This has happened 4 times in the past week. Their solution offered was:
--------------------------------------------
You can try checking some things:
1). There is supposed to be '127.0.0.1' or 'localhost.localdomain' in config.php file.
2). Admin password for MySQL. Sometimes you need to reset it through the control panel to the same that you have in config.php file.
--------------------------------------------
Of course, unless those had both been set correctly the board would not have been working four hours earlier!
In short, the board drops, you tell them them account and PW, and tech support goes in manually to reset those parameters, so your board can operate again.
Can anyone reccomend to me a GOOD inexpensive server?
First time I heard of such thing...seems a master mysql table corruption. We run boards frequently (including our own) and never saw such an issue.
Also, its not just running a Board/Forum, Mysql on hosting services is used by business sites...programs, people have intranets running on servers...can't have mysql table corruption...would be very counter-productive.
Nymix-CB 12-11-2003, 10:30 AM Well this happens :)
You could try to ask them to move to another server?
johnthomas 12-11-2003, 11:09 AM OK, after going round and round and trying lots of different fixes they suggested with my configuration, Canaca finally acknowledged that the problem was with the MySQL admin on their side of things.
Yes! I am not insane!!!!:cartman:
They are 'hoping' that the developer will have the problem fixed 'within a day or two.'
wheimeng 12-11-2003, 10:51 PM You can either change host and opt for VPS.
johnthomas 12-13-2003, 10:18 AM The really sad part is that it took them 2 weeks to even acknowledge there was a problem on their end.
That is crappy service, IMHO.
Well, if you haven't prepaid quarterly or annual...then why wait. Find a good host and shift...if you feel they don't do good support.
But on the other hand, hosts can have problems that might take time to troubleshoot...that is generally ok, as long as they are responsive and you know they are genuinely troubleshooting your issue. All issues are not black-n-white...so as long as you know they are treating you well and are looking seriously into your problem, then you don't have a reason to shift yet.
johnthomas 12-15-2003, 06:13 PM Just wanted the WHOLE word to know they STILL are having problems!
johnthomas 12-15-2003, 06:37 PM All of their tech support phone lines are being flooded. What amazes me is that they have known about this problem, are balming the company that supplies them with software, and are unable to fix it.
God, if your system can't keep MySql passwords straight, why are you even in this business???
johnthomas 12-15-2003, 08:05 PM Just found out, their 24/7 tech support is e-mail.
That means you can send e-mail to them 24 hours a day. Beyond that, well their offices are only open from 9am to 5pm, which means when their server screws up, you can have up to 16 hours of downtime before anyone even starts to work on it.
I am switching tomorrow...
CANACA SUCKS!!!!
mississa 12-17-2003, 11:35 PM Dear johnthomas,
We always have people on site. If a server needs to be rebooted it will only take a few minutes. Sorry that we can not meet the level of service you require. Please call our accounting department and you will be issued a refund for the remainder of your term.
inanna 12-22-2003, 05:55 PM I just moved my reseller account away from them. Server was hacked over a week ago and then crashed a few days later. As of yesterday some pages were still showing the hacked page, my mailing lists were gone, subdomains gone and php was broken. They kept telling me everything was fixed.....even after I sent them URLs showing that it wasn't. Lousy service, lousy tech support and now I am fighting for a refund on the 6 months hosting I still have.
Zenutech 12-22-2003, 08:18 PM johnthomas,
Many, so many companies, claim to offer 24/7 tech support. When you really need it, you realize that it's by email only, *suspicion eyebrow rises*. How can company say it's 24/7, when they have a phone number and that they only accept calls 8 hours a day.
I am sure that some company offer true 24/7 email support without the phone, but I think in most cases they are gone to bed and the email will be "received by their mailbox - 24/7!".
Companies offering true 24/7 support are the companies you call 24/7 and they answer anytime. I think a lot fewer companies offer this type of high - level support, correct me if anything I said here is wrong or you do not agree with :)
Ethical Network 12-23-2003, 01:50 AM Zenutech
I disagree with you. I have dealt with many hosting companies in the past that offered true 24/7 email support. You could email them any time of the day or night, and someone would always get back to you ASAP.
inanna 12-29-2003, 08:05 PM Get this one. Canaca is refusing to refund my money because they say their tech team has been over everything and it is all working. This was hacked over two weeks ago now 64.141.45.72/circle/index.php, but it is all fixed..........Just a drop in the bucket. My mailing lists and subdomains there are still gone. Cpanel says 0 disk space is being used. They don't have a clue of what they are doing.
Zenutech 12-29-2003, 08:44 PM inanna,
They probably fixed it but did NOT recover your files from backup (if they have any backups).
In this case I believe they will force you to re-upload your files from your own backups.
