Some background info:
I'm currently hosting with Hostcentric/web2010 as a reseller. I have no complaints about the system there, my support tickets are always answered in a reasonable time, etc, but I'm not exactly pushing the limits with my accounts there either. My average cost to host a basic site is US $5.20 each. I'm only hosting a handful of sites at the moment. My hosting/experiance level right now might be considered experimental by most (even me)
Okay, with that said, I'm looking to do some growing. I believe the online advertising model of today is a bust. At the start of the commercial internet, most if not all companies were on a level playing field, but now, those with the deepest pockets will dominate thier industry space. I'm not saying that the small to medium host can't make it, they can, and do, but need to differentiate themselves in thier space. (The USP)
I'm considering teaming up with a few local organizations to offer hosting and other services to thier clients and users. One that comes to mind, is our local chamber of commerce. About 1,500 local businesses belong. The majority of them do not have an online presence. The chamber has a site, but it is geared in general to the public about local events, and prospecting for new members. But they don't have a site for the actual membership. I'm considering offering them a site, but would like to know you guys think would be benificial to the membership.
I would like to offer each member a subdomain for little to no cost. Nothing robust in features; just a basic page with a bio and directory info about the company. The main idea is to offer a service that has value, inexpensively to me, in order to get everyone online. From there, I believe once people get online and start using it, they will want to purchase services and such. Not everyone will of course.
What do you think? What suggestions or pitfalls do you see? What type of hardware would you suggest? (I'm leaning toward a colo at terra-byte)
Hmmm... I wasn't gonna write such a long post.....
