View Full Version : Philanthropists in The Website Hosting Industry?
The Pioneer 12-10-2003, 08:03 PM Are there any philanthropists in the website hosting industry?
Many providers are usually stingy with money, but how many are willing to give monetary contributions?
nickn 12-10-2003, 08:12 PM I don't think we can deny that Robert has given here and there...or, EV1 in general has. :)

We sponsor (http://www.aussiecharity.com) some children via World Vision and our kids love it, and we sponsor a local softball team. If there's something happening locally, at a school or via the business groups, it's always good to "give a little back".

Kerry Jones 12-11-2003, 01:12 AM I am willing to give out with my company when it gets bigger. When I start gaining money i'm going to sign up for the adopt-a-highway program. We get a sign along the highway that says something like "This road is pollution free by icyhost.com". You have to pay for plants and various things you want to add by the road, but it shows people that a company can care. :-)
Odd Fact 12-11-2003, 01:21 AM I donata money to the Salvation Army Angel Tree and help buy supplies for local animal rescue groups. I actually donata a good deal of time to local non-profits. My experiance has been that most groups always need good help. It is easy to give money, but more difficult to give your time.
net-trend 12-11-2003, 04:55 AM I donate to the Salvation Army when I can and then I found out through a local affairs program that they misuse the money.
So if you are in Australia, think twice before donating to the Salvation Army.
I used to buy a heap of raffle tickets for many charitable organizations as well and found out a good many of them are frauds as well.
Now each time I donate, i'm highly suspicious of the way they use the monies they receive.
Kimmikat 12-11-2003, 06:23 AM I worked for the Salvation Army for a short time, and they have more money then they want people to believe. Also the prices in their thrift store is extreme. I've seen an old tube type colour tv for $299.

Actually, when I was working in the San Francisco bay area I used to see many .com sponsorships for road’s and parks.
RajanUrs 01-22-2004, 06:40 PM Speaking of trees here is an interesting comparison:
1.
A poor woman, near my city Bangalore in South India, didnt have any children so she planted hundreds of trees along a state highway. She cared for them all her life like her own children without taking any help from anyone . She was recognised by the govt and was presented several awards and won appreciation by admirers from across the globe.

2.
A leading info tech company in India adopted a park near my house for development. One of their division office was located across the road from the park. They spruced up the park spending a lot of money and placed signboards advertising for their company. They also appointed several security staff to guard the park from being misused. During lunch time the company workers used the park for relaxing and eating their lunch. A few miles away they also built a huge corporate office. The area was undeveloped and the approach roads was horrible. But the software giant chose this location because it saved them lot of money. Then they complained the road was bad and so the govt spent a lot of taxpayers money to rebuild the road to the corporate office.
The poor woman didnt need any money.....but a huge software giant worth billions of $s could not match her efforts and achievement. The end result justified the means for both of them......though incomparable.

sightz 01-22-2004, 07:08 PM We sponsor a local winter carnival by providing what we are already good at - web site, hosting, and related technologies.
Last year we had a live webcam at the event, and uploaded digital pictures every few hours. People liked it so well that the local newspaper (city of 50,000) did a story on my company.
That was some nice exposure, and it's nice to give back to the community.
