View Full Version : 80% Packet Loss?

I've been seeing like 80% packet loss on my desktop for quite a while... After bypassing my router, I still see the loss, so it's not that I've horribly screwed something up. :)

Anyway, what irritates me is that it's 'theoretical' packet loss -- I can do downloads close to my 3 Mbps cap; I can play games like Counter-Strike that don't handle high pings / packet loss well. The only time I notice it is when I try to ping something, it almost invariably times out, with perhaps 5% of my pings going through; running mtr (Matt's Traceroute) shows packet loss between 50 and 99%.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? It doesn't really impact performance, but it drives me insane knowing that it's there. I have a screenshot of mtr at http://n1zyy.com/packetloss.png

It is quite possible your host is throttling ICMP in light of the blaster/welchia outbreaks a little while back

I sort of doubt that eBoundary... ISPs either completely disabled ICMP or left it active.
Adelphia, what he has, completely disabled ICMPs..

Seeing how he gets PL at the headend/CMTS its a problem with Adelphia and there are known problems in NH as well as big probs that were supposedly fixed in Buffalo and the DFW/FTW area with Adelphia.

Call them up and have a tech come to your house and check your signal levels and/or do a line test. Could be something at your node or something with internal wiring at your house.

I didnt look at the png since i was in a console browser :)

I know of several smaller ISP's who throttled ICMP rather than disabled totally.

I've had the same issue with Comcast. Just power cycle your equipment.
