View Full Version : Referal Links
steveTobb 12-08-2003, 04:05 PM We put some advertisements up on different websites, and we are looking to do this.
Is there something that will manage who visits from what website?
Thanks,
steve

Hmm.
Take a look at your logs, for start.
You will probably want to have somewhat more firm girp over referal links. Look into affiliate scripts, run a search at google or at hotscripts...

dbbrock1 12-08-2003, 04:30 PM The easiest way to do it would be to have them link the advert to www.yourwebsite.com/?website_name_here
You don't need any affiliate script.
Just add some variable in the end of the URL.
Such as, http://xeohosting.com/?WHT
Then, the website will load just the same as http://xeohosting.com/ , and ?WHT will appear in your log.

By logs you mean web stats (webalizer, awestats, etc)?
Thanks,
Steve
I mean the raw log, but it will also appear in you statistic program.
VanHost 12-08-2003, 05:43 PM One way, that has worked well for us (may not for others), is to create a subdomain that re-directs to your home page.
Ie. If you are advertising on WHT, create a sub-domain called WHT. The have your advertisement link to "wht.yourdomain.com", which in turn gets redirected to your home page. Then when you go to your stats, just look at your sub-domain stats. I personally find it a little easier than raw log tracking :)
steveTobb 12-08-2003, 05:48 PM Ok, do you know if that is easier than http://yourdomain/?wht
VanHost 12-08-2003, 05:50 PM It may be a few more steps to set it up, but the stats are certainly easier to read. As well, not that it matters a heck of a lot, but the tracking is invisible to the user (somewhat moreso than the other method).
steveTobb 12-08-2003, 05:56 PM Thanks, I am going to try the domain redirect...
btw, do you know the code for redirecting?
-thanks,
steve
VanHost 12-08-2003, 06:29 PM If you have cPanel, it has subdomain redirects included. It is pretty simple to setup.
steveTobb 12-08-2003, 07:09 PM wait, we do have cPanel, how do you set that up?
Thanks,
steve
VanHost 12-08-2003, 07:12 PM You would add the sub-domain, and then under the same menu (Sub-Domains) you would SETUP REDIRECTION.
Good luck.
steveTobb 12-08-2003, 07:22 PM ok, sorry, i knew that... lol
