Just wondering.. is it possible for a Mac and a PC (with windows) to share a DSL connection? Such as thru a network or something like that.

Thanks,

- Shawn

Sure, there are routers out there that are both PC and Mac compatible. ;)

Thanks, a yes is what I wanted :)
So, how much are routers usually that are Mac/PC complient? And... sorry for this stupid question, but what is a router? And how does it hook up to both computers? And, does it allow a Mac and PC to use the internet at the same time? Or does one person have to wait till it's clear to use?

Thanks dude,

- Shawn

Go get yourself a Residential DSL/Cable Gateway Router.

I suggest the SMC Barricade but there is also routers from D-Link, 3Com, Netgear and Linksys.

They all run from $99 and up depending on features etc.. You should get one with at least 2 or more 10/100 ethernet ports.

You simply plug the DSL connection into the router and the 2 computers into the router. Set the Network to DHCP on the computers and you are now sharing the connections.

Can can even get wireless routers that allow you to connect with out cables.

Alternatively, you could just set one of your computers (the one that's connected to DSL) to be a gateway and have all the other computers go through it. There's a ton of software that will do this (I think newer versions of Windows have it built in?)

Hmm... so I wouldn't need a router than right? And, are you meaning that the computer(s) that aren't directly hooked to the DSL, just hook up to the computer that has the DSL connection, and it'll act as a Network? Ahhh, well can Mac and PCs network? That's what i'll be dealing with, one Mac, and one PC.

Thanks & Peace,

Don't listen to Planet Z. He means well but setting up one machine as a router will be a bit much for you. Get the device that I suggested and you will not be sorry.

Wireless Lan is the way to do it.

Definately spend some money and buy a router similar to the one Remarkable has suggested. You could even head off to ebay and find a good product for your dollar there. Just be sure to get the right one! ;)

Good Luck!

Hey guys, thanks so much for your help! Yeah, I'll take Remarkable's advice - I'll probably buy a router - and I'll take Eric's advice, I'll probably buy it on eBay :D

Thanks again,

- Shawn
