I'm looking for a host for my site, which is about a video game clone called Zelda Classic. Here's what I'm looking for:

Linux server
400-500 MB space; 300 might be enough, but extra is always good
20 GB monthly transfer; less than 10 won't cut it
PHP4
SSI
At least 1 MySQL database; query limits are undesirable, as I have well over 50,000 rows in my database that will be restored
Multiple subdomains and FTP accounts
POP3 email accounts
Preferably no more than $12/mo

I've considered 3 hosts so far, 2 of them I'm almost certain won't do.

1. StartLogic - Their query limit is very small, they also have an emails sent limit. I also checked the signup page and saw no $7.50/mo plan to choose.
2. PowWeb - Looks like it might work, but they too have a query limit, and I've read very bad things about them on these forums.
3. Dot5Hosting - I'm liking what I see here. I've asked 2 questions about their MySQL and got very fast response. I've read both bad and good things about them on these forums.

I really want to make sure I pick the right host, because I'm stick behind a 24K dialup connection, so I have to get a friend to help me move my files. :( Are there any suggestions?

Edit: Forgot to mention Linux server as a desire.

If you poke around the Web Hosting Offers forum, you'd find some good people there, some hosts might even offer to help move your site for you, so you don't have to worry about it.

Good luck!

You might want to take a look at the "search" feature about those companies, might help you find more information.

You will find a lot of feedback on the 2 latter providers that you have stated. I don't think it is a good idea to go ahead with them.

Search around, with that price range, its possible to find a decent host. Add few bucks would be more feasible.

i feel by paying $12 month you might get a Windows host with the same space and bandwidth requirement... and about a linux host you should get....... cause their are lot many who are providing same at say around $ 8.25 a month....... that is $ 99 a year......

For 500MB space and 20GB Data Transfer, $12/month is reasonable. Look around and I'm sure you'll find some good webhosts here

Well, it's been said by people who know more than I do that you should ideally look for a host that charges in the ball park of $1.00 / 1 GB of bandwidth.

Also, you should perhaps look for a host that provides SSH if your MySQL Db is bigger than say, 2 MB...(I've personally experience quite a bit of pain when trying to restore a DB that is bigger than 2 MB with Phpmyadmin.)

Just don't go for the first host that offers the most for the least.

My database is nearly 30 MB. :o If I can get a host that uses CPanel, I might not have to worry about that, since my current host uses it.

I've gotten 2 recommendations over PM, both of which look reasonable. They're more expensive than I'd like to have to pay, but I'll pay what I have to to ensure quality.

Did you get recommendations over PM, or spam advertisements over PM?

You could probably call one of them spam. One of them was just a recommendation, the other was an offer. I think the person who sent me the latter was banned, heh.

I wish more people had the guts to post their "offers" in the public, instead of continually violating the rules. :(

While I will make it clear that I have never used them personally, I have been looking at them. Have you given Rochen Host (http://www.rochenhost.com/multiple-domain-hosting/) a look? They have 2 smaller plans that might be right for you. They do have an active forum that you could view and perhaps ask pre-sales questions. Rochen is also on these forums. If your budget were higher, I could recommend others.

Also note that many hosting providers will be willing to help move your site if you ask them.

I believe that is against the rules here...

Hm... I can provide that for only $.99/mo!

LOL :D

The best teacher is trial and error my friend. It's not a guarantee that if a host best for me fits you too. I mean, my current host is banned from this forum (for an unknown reason) and yet they still gives me a great support and uptime.

WebDude, that was very very dry sarcasm. I mean, if someone's gonna break the rules via PM's, why not have the guts and do it publicly? Just very cowardly, in my eyes. :)
