Winkie 12-05-2003, 10:51 AM It's hard to say, most customers won't exceed 200 meg, but you'll get those who grab 5 gig of tarballs. Coach 12-05-2003, 10:53 AM On average, I'd say the sites I host use about 80 MB of space. Douglas 12-05-2003, 10:59 AM I must be in my own league then, cause I have a few customers (myself included) that run into the hundreds of megs (One of my sites is almost 400 megs, without the db). Coach 12-05-2003, 12:18 PM Well, there are several that run into several gigs, however that is not the norm. We're looking at averages here. :) Lippy 12-05-2003, 12:25 PM Average user that I have seen uses about 50-200 MB but there are many who use 10 MB and many who use 1-5 GB its all depends on the user and the site content. Heymish 12-05-2003, 06:57 PM exactly - it all depends on what the conent is, porn sites well have a lot more space used than a static html site :) thedavid 12-05-2003, 07:01 PM Usually 50-150 megs, on average, over here. Including mail and everything else... Broad range, I know... Most people see those lower quotas and don't understand that it's usually more than enough for whatever they need to do. -David JoshyJ 12-06-2003, 04:29 AM that means if i get an account with 4 gigz for AUS $59.95, then ill be able to on average be able to hold 40 , 100 mb sites, (just threw up 100 mb as an average) , if i resell 100 mb space accounts for $10 each, then ill be able to get a income of $400 mb, take away costs each month which for meeh i calculated to be $245.95, which mean each month ill be getting a profit of $150.05, i say $10 as ive seen accounts that hold 500mb for $19.95, and if i put prices at $5 which would be the closest to the right cost of 100mb which i beleive then i would be at a loss, but if i do relocation, i would be able to hold 2160 if all sites were 100mb spaces, which is 90% of total space, as left room as to not degrade speed, and if i sell that at $10 a 100mb space then equals $21000, minus costs, which would turn out to be $386 if co-location costs $200, which profit would be $20 614, i calculated only through space, not using bandwidth so this is pretty iffy, also didnt consider tax......but did include costs such as advertising and merchant account, and that of colocation and reseller costs.... also for co location i considered my current computer space of 240 000 mb, yes i said it right in other words 240 gig, ummzzz yeaha, does this seem right, well for reseller seems right, but co location seems really really imaginable, also all prices are in Australian dollars.... thedavid 12-06-2003, 04:38 AM I just breezed through that response, and I can only say one thing as a reccomendation to you. Don't sell yourself to the limit - have some 'slack' space and bandwidth. People will and do go over, and they don't like to see disk space quota errors or bandwidth shutdown screens. Also - don't sit and try to divide out exactly what X is going to be and Y is going to be - this isn't an exact science :) Instead, ask yourself 1 thing: How much do I want to make, profit-wise, off of this server/reseller account? Now take that number and divide it up - work from that angle, it's easier. Just my opinion. -David Tux-e-do 12-06-2003, 04:45 AM Originally posted by JoshyJ that means if i get an account with 4 gigz for AUS $59.95, then ill be able to on average be able to hold 40 , 100 mb sites, (just threw up 100 mb as an average) , if i resell 100 mb space accounts for $10 each, then ill be able to get a income of $400 mb, take away costs each month which for meeh i calculated to be $245.95, which mean each month ill be getting a profit of $150.05, i say $10 as ive seen accounts that hold 500mb for $19.95, and if i put prices at $5 which would be the closest to the right cost of 100mb which i beleive then i would be at a loss, but if i do relocation, i would be able to hold 2160 if all sites were 100mb spaces, which is 90% of total space, as left room as to not degrade speed, and if i sell that at $10 a 100mb space then equals $21000, minus costs, which would turn out to be $386 if co-location costs $200, which profit would be $20 614, i calculated only through space, not using bandwidth so this is pretty iffy, also didnt consider tax......but did include costs such as advertising and merchant account, and that of colocation and reseller costs.... also for co location i considered my current computer space of 240 000 mb, yes i said it right in other words 240 gig, ummzzz yeaha, does this seem right, well for reseller seems right, but co location seems really really imaginable, also all prices are in Australian dollars.... Take away the costs to manage your server, pay support staff, superanuation, accountant (you don't want to do your own tax) and another 15% for stuff you don't think of and your left with $1 profit :D Best to start with all your expenses and then work out your pricing. You might find that you can't operate for $10 per 100 meg. JoshyJ 12-06-2003, 05:20 AM hope my friend could be my accountant for meeh, for free hopefully (only wishes) Swas-MARK 01-22-2004, 05:54 PM Including mail, databases and everything else, my clients use 10-80MB on average. wheimeng 01-22-2004, 09:03 PM However it could be 1GB or larger if there are a lot of pictures. I have a client using 5GB space... cartika-andrew 01-22-2004, 09:45 PM Originally posted by Swas-MARK Including mail, databases and everything else, my clients use 10-80MB on average. Thats pretty much what we're seeing as well... Obviously people exist on either extreme, but as far as averages go, these numbers seem bang on to me... Intersabre 01-22-2004, 10:00 PM Forum sites can get large very quickly. Okay, I felt that it was fair to update my post, since this was before I took over a couple other hosting companies... F3 is approx 150 megs, DB is approx 115 megs for a total of approx 265 megs (only two real emails there). DDLR is approx 3.5 gigs with a 280 meg DB for 4 gigs of total space. There's a few others... Definitely not the norm. The average site that I see on my server is around 10-50 megs... XPN Kevin 01-22-2004, 11:01 PM mine are about 100mb on average. Don't really calculate this though as I have always believed in underallocating your total resources to leave room for expansion. Douglas 01-23-2004, 12:00 AM Same here, Kevin... same here. I've had one guy trying to tell me how to run my business, accusing me of overselling the individual plans to clients. My firm belief is that I want to ENCOURAGE sites to grow and expand... it really makes me feel like I've helped them expand their sites and stuff. It's almost like watching children grow into astounding adults. :) |
