View Full Version : My advice: avoid WHHQ
bgplayer 09-25-2000, 08:04 AM I ordered WHHQ's Free Power Server last Wednesday,
Sept 20, and so far I am very displeased (to say the least) with their service. Here's an account of what I've experienced so far:
I was notified that the server was online at about
4:30pm, Thur, Sept 21. When I logged in to check things out, I discovered that the machine only had 64MB RAM, and a 8.7GB disk, which is less than the advertised 128MB RAM and 15GB disk. At 7:45pm, Thur, Sept 21, I sent a letter to
engineer@whhq.net detailing these problems. I have never received a response.
Our company has done alot of work preparing and promoting the opening of our server. Yesterday - Sun, Sept 24, was the first day we were open to the public. Until approximately 11:45am, that is, when the server became unreachable. I immediately tried to call, but only got voice mail. I tried leaving a message for technical
support, but was repeatedly patched into sales!? So I went to the website and filled out a support ticket). I also sent email to support@whhq.net and engineer.whhq.net. I even sent a fax. I never received a reply. 4 hours later, I tried again...still no one home. So much for their
advertised 24/7 monitoring? Our company's opening
day was ruined for what I've gathered (based on traceroute and ping tests) is a router/gateway problem with their network. Our machine did become reachable again - at about
12:15am, Mon, Sept 25. It was down for 12 and 1/2 hours!!!! And, it later went back down again, around 4am, Mon Sept 25, and our machine is unreachable as I write this.
So, BE WARNED!
cbaker17 09-25-2000, 10:07 AM Sorry to hear of your troubles. Do they guerentee any type of a uptime??? I would suggest moving on. Theres alot of better host out there. You need better support than that, in the dedicated server ind. you have to have 24/7 live support or at least support that responds within the hour to make it...
Oh well thanks for the heads up for all the other webmasters out there. Keep us posted on what you do.
Good Luck
webfors 09-25-2000, 11:27 AM I almost signed up with WHHQ a few months ago until I called their sales and support people and noticed they knew nothing about dedicated servers. If you had done a search on these or other forums you would have known this before hand. Unfortunately not everyone is aware of these forums, which leaves the client at a serious disadvantage.
Hopefully you will leave them and move on to a more reputable host. Do a search on these forums and you will find examples of excellent hosts for dedicated servers.
Coreace 09-25-2000, 12:16 PM bgplayer,
Sorry to hear of your problems. I too as tabernack almost signed up and I am glad I didn't. If you need help in finding a new provider please feel free to email me.
Chicken 09-25-2000, 06:03 PM Not to make light of your situation, but I says it once, and I says it again... "Just Pick The Color"... that told me all I needed to know, heh.
*wonders what color bgplayer picked*
cbaker17 09-25-2000, 06:57 PM I know exactly what your saying chicken!!! WHo cares what the color is, its a dedicated server not a couch.
Chicken, didn't get that joke initially until I visited that site. Now........ How pathetic is that?!
diyoha 09-26-2000, 12:21 AM Howdy,
I was burned a couple times and I know the feeling.
I got a dedicated server from a company and the specs where not what I paid for. I had an ongoing argument with the tech guy (who was rude as hell). I guess he assumed I knew nothing but after working with computers for years (and getting a computer engineering degree) I know a little ;)
I ended up getting half my money back and getting outta there.
Now before I go with any host I research for hours upon hours checking references, the news groups, forums etc.

You must avoid these companies offering, lease2own servers,
or host2own servers, or $99/mo servers.... I think
they may face the same or similar problem. These companies
lease their servers and they can not turn around and give
it to someone after 2 years...
Quoted from their web site at http://www.whhq.net/
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!
Please be advised that, on December 28, 2000, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission asked the Federal Court in Miami, Florida to freeze all of the assets of Web Hosting Headquarters and its principals, and to appoint an emergency Receiver over Web Hosting Headquarters, alleging that they had defrauded investors and customers. The Federal Court granted the SEC's motion and appointed Christian R. Bartholomew as Receiver on December 28, 2000.
Under the Court's Order, the Receiver is required to and has taken possession and custody of the offices and computers. The Court's Order also requires the Receiver to investigate the business and affairs of Web Hosting Headquarters, including what funds were raised and how they were used, and the Receiver is currently in the process of doing this.
dektong 01-10-2001, 01:19 AM I almost lease a server or colocate my server at WHHQ just few day before I came to this form (webhsotingtalk.com) to find out some possible problem with the company...
It's kinda suprising to realize how close I was to get into big problem....
cheers,

Dylan 01-10-2001, 08:16 AM Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like I am going to have to move ALL my clients.
I must admit WHHQ is sh*t (don't even get me started) and I'm glad something is being done about it.
venomx 01-10-2001, 07:04 PM Nice to see the government cracking down on these types of hosting places.
CRego3D 01-10-2001, 07:22 PM no kidding, it's time these people realize you cannot toy with customers the way they do
venomx 01-10-2001, 07:31 PM I was going to post a deal to all WHHQ sites that have to find a new host but I dont think its allowed here ;p
Chicken 01-10-2001, 07:55 PM *That* is correct. However you are allowed to do this in our handy-dandy Advertising Forum!
brandonk 01-10-2001, 09:38 PM I've got a Power Server and my own RaQ 2 with them. But I won't be getting either of them. Even my OWN RaQ2. I've called and left messages for the receive fifteen million times and it seems like I gotta better response when they were still doing business. Oh Well, I'm with 4Webspace.com and I've decided I like them much better.
Brandon
This is according to my CFO who was a receiver with KPMG before he came with me. when a company goes into receivership the first objective is to keep the business running and keep income flowing while they figure stuff out. the next objective is to figure out who owns everything in the building, the third is to liquidate or run the business depending on its viability. this means if you have a co-located server there chances are if they have any sort of records you wont loose it. there is also a good chance your contract would be sold to a company like Verio (they buy dedicated server contracts all the time from all over) so you wont end up down and out. finally they could bring in some management that knows what they are doing and you will stay put.

AlaskanWolf 01-11-2001, 04:55 AM What did WHHQ exactly do? rip off customers? whats so bad that the govt has to take over the company

Deb Suran 01-11-2001, 10:01 AM Do a search here and on some of the other boards. There were reports of people puchasing dedicated server packages from them, then finding they hadn't gotten the servers they'd ordered and paid for. There were enough of these for me to add them to the "avoid" list on my "how to find a host" page at http://www.forumhosts.com/hosts.htm.
Chicken 01-11-2001, 10:07 AM Hey Deb, is annoying the moderators enough to get added to that list? :) I have a few for you *wink wink*
MattF 01-11-2001, 02:22 PM Yep. In my opinion WHHQ is bad news, judging by the number of complaints and lack of praise. I had a feeling about them from the moment they sent me a "threat", every (and I mean every) company that sends WHT or HI a "threat" always goes from bad to worse and most go under, any reputable company (with good business sense) would investigate complaints rather than ignoring the underlying issue.
Maybe the contact number on the bottom of this will help those trying to get in touch with them.
To whom it may concern:
I have written several emails to your company and have yet to receive a response. I am sure that you are very busy. I have requested the removal of the negative information which has been posted about our company located at: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=2139.
I am trying to resolve this in an amicable way and yet, after 3 emails have still not received any response. Please email me at kmiller@whhq.net or call 305-622-6669 extension 207 and so we may discuss the current situation.Your prompt reply would greatly be appreciated.
