View Full Version : Domains in prison

In the .EU topic, someone mentioned he would like to have michaeljackson.eu
By the time .EU will be on, Michael may already be behind bars...

That brings me to the question: what happens to a domain when the owner is sent to prison ? Is the domain cancelled, or can someone still own a domain with his prison address ?

A little PS : I ask this out of interest, not because I am being sent to jail... Just to avoid any confusion.

I don't think there is any reason they wouldn't be able to own the domain name. It's not like voting, where you have your right revoked.

The con may want to put someone elses email on file, since I doubt they can check it often, and may lose it that way. (if someone tries to contact them and can't).

But on another note, how many years of hard time you have to do? (j/k)

If you're married, you're a prisoner :D

Well speaking as a newb I would say as long as bubbles or his secretary, dunno maybe bubbles is his secretary, anyway as long as it/she/him pays the yearly fee, and he does not break the rules then old twinkle toes is as safe as houses.
That is until he/she/it gets banged up then they are at the mercy of other convicts, unless they go into solitary confinement, which has its benefits as it would then present an ideal opportunity to come up with some great domain names.......hmm vicious circle

Some prisoners lose their civil rights during the time they are in jail.

I don't know if it is necessary to be able to be e-mailed to keep a domain name, as long as the con would pay the renewal fee, I don't think that would be a problem.
But the question is if the con is allowed in the first place to own a domain ? It may be that the prison doesn't want to use their address (which is the con's address as well) for a domain, or maybe they would forbid it because it is seen as a privilege that the convict doesn't deserve ?

I also wonder what happens with "name domains". If you register michaeljackson.com, you steal his name and he could legally force you to hand over the domain to him (which happened some time ago with an Irish actor that won a court case against someone registering his name)
But can Michael Jackson still legally claim michaeljackson.com if he is sent to prison ?

Maybe a bad example because the domain name exists already. But a better example would be: a guy named Joao Smith is in prison and someone registers joaosmith.com - can the con demand his name back or has he no right to do this because of the fact he's in prison ?

@ DaminalEQ : I don't know how many years I will be in jail. After all, all I did was raping 2 girls, robbing 7 banks, murdering 9 people, and stealing 20 cars ;)

No, just kidding ! I am a free man without criminal record :) I asked this question just out of interest.

LOL :)

But seriously, charliemanson.com is owned by just someone who made a study on the Manson Family. Charles Manson (who lives in a prison in California for 34 years now) doesn't own the name charliemanson.com himself !

Imagine Charles Manson would want to own that domain, would he have the right to claim it ? Or can't he force the owner to hand over the domain, because Charlie is in prison himself ?

Maybe a new prisoner domain extention would be the solution :

.prison

or, even better: .con :)

Of course there'd be local presence required (= you have to be in prison to own such a domain) :)

what does "can" have to do with a prison or prisoner ?

I don't know many English words for things related to prison. When I discuss prison life with my American friends, I use "convict", "prisoner" or "con"
And to point at the building I use the word "jail" or "prison".
