View Full Version : Longdistance solution?
Zoltrix 12-02-2003, 01:53 AM Hey,
This is the quick run down... Durring summer I met the love of my life and we hit it off for about 2 weeks.... Then I find out shes in Alberta, Canada, and im in B.C.
Can handle the long distance, flights over on weekends, no problem..
Spending an average of 3 hours on the phone with her a night. Im using calling cards and she used her phone company. Anyway.. she got her phone bill this evening and.. well.. she could have flown back and forth 3 or 4 times.
Soooo.... Im looking for the ultimate long distance phone solution.. I have seen something about phone over IP?. Can anyone help me shink our phone bills?

svdorr 12-02-2003, 08:24 AM You can try Skype, and it's free.

Acroplex 12-02-2003, 10:03 AM Vonage has some bad rep recently. Check out DSLReports.com
Webdude 12-02-2003, 10:09 AM Skype works thru your computer, so you have to use one phone, right? With Vonage, all my phone jacks in the house are powered.

#6. I see no way to pay right now, so I assume this hasnt gone into effect yet...
Acroplex 12-02-2003, 09:49 PM Skype is not VoIP. It's simply voice chat software to connect to other Skype users.
xyzulu 12-02-2003, 09:58 PM If you are both on DSL MSN, AIM, Yahoo will all do an excellent job. All you need is a good headset with a boom mic - $15
Zoltrix 12-03-2003, 08:06 PM Hmm, AIM and MSN sound like THE solution. The thing is we would both need a computer on either end.
Vonage looks like a NICE solution for me. Alittle on the pricy side as I dont have cable or ADSL yet. But if I work it all out, its a hell of alot cheaper then what the last phone bill was.
Im in canada though, I belive (read it last night) that they wont ship there product to Canada. Anyone know if I could technicaly have it shiped to the USA and walk it across the boarder, plug it in my home in canada and have it work? Should right, just wont have a phone number in Canada right?
Webdude 12-03-2003, 08:57 PM I would say have it drop shipped right across the border and then go get it. However, the border patrol might make you pay taxes on it. Just say it cost you $10. If you say it was free, they will estimate a tax, so dont do that.
I my network world, customers have told me that they have taken the unit to other countries and it works fine if you hook it to a high speed connection. They use it...well, how do I say this....husbands who work in other countries take it with them so their wives and family can call them using their local number and no-one pays long distance.
As far as Skype....I got it and had several other people get it. One in Florida on highspeed, and one in Australia on dialup. The one in Florida sounded great, the one in Australia was a bit, well, not quite so good. It cut in and out, but was clear when it was in. The call also dropped about every couple of minutes. Still impressive considering the distance and the fact that she was on a slow dialup..

That was probably the main problem.
If I went he Vonage way, I could still call Alberta free, Just she wouldnt be able to call me because I would have some US number?
Webdude 12-03-2003, 10:09 PM Right, it would be long distance for her to call you.
