We pay:

- $200 for a telephone line install.
- over $50/month for unmetered broadband (256k+).
- $160 for ADSL modems..
- around $1000 for decent spec'd PC's.

Where will it ever stop? :(

Aussies ain't the only ones. Add most of Europe to that too.

vito

That does seem a tad expensive.

You can always move to Canada - where, BTW, the toilet flushes in the right direction... :D

Ahh.. Canada is great. Hi-speed modem is free, installation and first months are free, 100Mbit connection ~$35 US. ;)

I think the toilet flushing in the right direction more than makes up for the extra taxes we have to pay... :D

Tax in Canada is miles better than in most of Europe.

I have to pay tax in both the UK, and Canada, and trust me, i look forward to the Canadian returns more than the UK ones.

Right as it stands, at home I'm on an Eastlink broadband (5mbps) connection, and pay $43 per month for it, with free Motorola "SurfBoard" of course :D

In the UK, use BT (ADSL broadband) and that's around £30 per month...

Canada's the cheapest country, for most things, out of the 3 I frequent (Ireland, Canada, England)

Oh yea? I made a deal with a Datacenter in Aust that charges $9,000 a month in aust dollars for a dedicated server. If these prices that you are giving are in AUST dollars its roughly around...

$75 for a telephone line install.
$over $30/month for unmetered broadband (256k+).
- $90 for ADSL modems..
- around $800 for decent spec'd PC's.

I don't have the exact numbers for aust dollars because I have recently stopped talking with my real parents for good hopefully.. and she works at a bank.

*notes to self. Open a business in Aust* :D

Security Group, those prices seem pretty standard to mefrom a British perspective, its jsut something you have to get used to though when you live in an afluent area of a nation in and more so in an afluent city like London or Sydney for you maybe.

The person who is working part time for the Canadian tourist board might live in both countries but i know where i'd rather be and that's my island in the atlantic.

Surely though, it is not the nation that determines the prices directly, it is the companies that provide the service, the prices are lower in Canada but how many telecommunications firms are in the top 5 or 10 when it comes to earnings? At those prices, probably none.

Prices in Canada might be cheaper but they have a lot of domesticlly located raw materials, once these are exhausted the taxes will rise to compensate; we had the industrial revolution over here in Europe and used most of our up in the 19th/20th centuries. Then there is the politics to the taxes and prices, there are many reasons. From what i've heard, the canadian gov probably spends less in proportion to the taxes collected thta the UK but i might be off.

What are the tax rates in Canada and Australia??.0 The basic stuff, NI/income tax/VAT etc Just to correct me if necessary.

If it is none of these factors then i'm back to the drawing board.

Broadband here would cost me $69/month for 256/64,$79 setup fee,$170 for the modem.I really gotta get a new PC aswell as this one is pissing me off which is about $1,600 out the window.

Actually now that I think of it, Japan and South Korea are the places to be if you want high speed internet. They are extremely connected and have a highly developed fiber optics network. They have MUCH more companies competing for customers, therefore selection and better quality is offered.

Wow...I just built a 2.5gz amd / 512 ddr ram / 256 meg video accelerator, and all the other goodies for just under $400. The local store here is Fry's Electronics where I got my stuff. Their online store is http://outpost.com

Dunno if you can order from Aussie...

silock, problem with those countries is the poor global connectivity, sure 100mbit internally is great for swapping files with next door, or vid confing but try getting a real fast speed from a usa server. Its better then 56k but its not as fast as it could be.

Not sure if this is so accurate to tell you the truth. We had a phone line installed to the house, it cost a bit more than 200 buck done by telstra ( aka satan ). I can't remember the exact figure but it was more than 250. Also, keep in mind that in Australia we pay about 20 - 25 cents for EACH local call plus MONTHLY line rental.. BAH!!

$50 bucks for unmetered broadband? Where? Maybe a comindico reseller like Dodo.com.au, but those deals may not be around that much longer. I've seen unmetered broadband deals come and go and come and ... I'm with telstra ADSL right now ( not by choice ) and im paying a good 90 bucks for 3 GB transfer each month.

$160 for an ADSL modem ain't that bad, plus if you check out whirlpool.net.au you'll see a new company just started offering $99 modems.. not bad if you ask me

$1000 for a decent PC? Half decent perhaps... Maybe a used celeron minus a monitor?

All above pricing is in AUD ( im guessing the origonal poster was in AUD as well ). Also keep in mind that AUD is at 72 cents to the 1 USD.

There are a few unmetered plans out there....

The catch? You get speed limited after you downloaded a set amount....

speed limited range is typically around 72k -> 33.6

Or if your with Optus cable, I believe the speed cap is 28.8

A few years back a new line cost around $200, plus $55 or so for "connection" fee...

$160 for adsl modems??

They start from around $99 (rrp) now...

All my pricing in $AU.

For the record.
Best ADSL ISP in AUS is www.iinet.net.au
Waaaaaayyy better than Tel$tra (yip - that what we call then here :) )

Telstra charge, wait for it, for traffic. Thats right up and down. And they advertise on TV get broadband now - $49 p/m for 256/500mb - Traffic! I do that in one day.

And if you want a good ADSL AUS resource www.whirlpool.com.au (rip off of bigpond - Telstra's internet division.

Telstra drive me up the wall! Anti-competitive behaviour etc etc.
Now that i have started, hows this:
For an ADSL port reset at the exchange, all carriers (ADSL) have to allow 24 hrs for telstra to do it (telstra is 51% gov owned, so own all the copper) but for a Telstra client, done by software straight away....

My blood pressure is rising already... better stop.....

I'm on an unlimited 256k plan with TPG for $69.00 a month, which is pretty cheap compared to other plans. ;)

Tel$tra broadband is capped at like 1gb/month in some places and optarse limiting its customers to below-56k speeds is pretty rediculous.

Costs about $1500 for a "good" computer, $1000 is budget range. :D

iinet.net.au's ADSL plans all have a quota but no extra charges, all they do is cap your speed hmm.

512/128
If your download volume exceeds 12'000MB during a 30 day peak period, or 8000MB during a 30 day off-peak period, your download speed will be shaped to 72Kb. If your download volume then exceeds 50% of the total traffic quota (18'000Mb peak, 12'000Mb off-peak), the download speed will reduce to 33.6Kb until your download volume is within the traffic quota specified.

erm, i didn't realise how lucky i am i suppose. us brits do not have to worry about how much we use broadband, I'm on a 512/256 line with no restrictions as to how much traffic I use. £30 a month.

I dont even think the BT infrastructure is capable of monitoring/limiting the use depending on amount.

Sorry blb but iinet just isn't in the race .. check out netspace ..way better prices ... http://www.netspace.net.au

Vito ... toilets aren't suppose to go anticlockwise there meant to go clockwise which really is academic anyway as we Aussie usually go behind a gum tree and anyway our beer is that strong that everything is already twirling before we get to the toilet.

TheDoctor

Yes I have been using them for the last two years ... there based in Camberwell .. Victoria ...but service all of Australia. I have never had an ounce of trouble .. had about 3 hrs downtime in the last two years .. but that was Australia wide Telecom problem...

I am not associated with them in anyway but would be happy to recommend them .. they have a toll free number for support and the prices have actually dropped since I started

Now if your a factory worker or labourer your hourly rate is $0.85 with overtime you would take home about $8.00 per day .. working a six day week would get you $48 per week ...
