View Full Version : mail and www. problems.. please help
thesmallguyshost 09-16-2001, 06:27 PM Ok.... thanks so much for everyone's help thus far.. I've made great headway. Mail and web is being delivered using onboard dns.... BUT with these problems:
I have the domain setup: thechattanoogacourier.com
mail is not beling delivered to: thechattanoogacourier.com but mail will be delivered to: www.thechattanoogacourier.com (we don't want mail to www. and have not included www. in the mx records).
Second, the domain will not resolve without WWW. it comes up with page cannot be displayed but will work with WWW.
What do I do now?
CmptrWz 09-16-2001, 07:00 PM Ok, I believe you need to add an Address(A) record without a hostname, only the domain, to get it to resolve without the www. And that would have to do with your mail problems as well.

Thanks for the reply... I failed to mention in my original post that I have done that... I have an A record with and without www.
Anything else I can check?

Chicken 09-16-2001, 10:57 PM Yes, depending on whether this is a RaQ 3 or 4...
RaQ3:
Go on the web to the siteadmin control panel (site settings). You will see two place with checkboxes:
Alias this domain (something like that)
Alias email (again, something like that)
Check both of the boxes, I know this isn't exact, but you should be able to figure it out and see what I mean.
-forgive the 'ish-ness' as I've not used a RaQ3 for a bit now...
RaQ4
Same, siteadmin control panel (site settings):
Web Server Aliases (type in the domain without the www)
Email Server Aliases (type in the domain without the www)
Done.
thesmallguyshost 09-16-2001, 11:39 PM Ok.. thanks.. that should do it.
I made those changes almost 2 hours ago... is that something that has to propagate through the ISP's DNS? It's still not working...

Chicken 09-17-2001, 01:00 AM No, that sort of thing should work pretty much instantly (for both). There may be some other problem, from reading your post again however, I can't really think of what else it is unless you haven't DNS'd the domain correctly (or you've made this change not too long ago).

No... it's still not working. I've setup another domain following your guide and it works fine.. with and without www.
I have it setup exactly the same... I don't see why this one is not working like that.
Chicken 09-17-2001, 09:22 AM Delete the site and recreate it. There might have been an error when it was set up and it just didn't write everything it was supposed to write. Probably easier than trying to go in and fix it otherwise.

I did that... 7 hours later... domain still won't load without www.
This is driving me crazy!
CmptrWz 09-17-2001, 03:16 PM Is this on a RAQ 4? If it is then the problem may just be with the DNS entries. Try taking them out and putting them back in again. If that does not work you may have to re-create the entire site again.
Oh, and don't forget to save the DNS changes!

Yes, it's on a Raq.. i've completely deleted everything having to do with the domain and DNS and readded it and saved the changes... it still will not load without www
Other domains I'm adding work fine without www.
Anything else I can look at ?
Chicken 09-18-2001, 01:16 AM Well, other than emailing me root & siteadmin, server info, etc. so I can take a look, I'm not sure what else to suggest. Some people don't feel comfortable with this (at least you shouldn't feel comfortable with this), but feel free to ask around if I'm really an evil mod or not :D
Even then, I'm not sure I'll know what's wrong, but...
gabriel 09-19-2001, 06:41 AM Hi, I have the same problem with one domain,
I test with:
- Remove and add the domain
- Change in DNS information.
- In control panel of RAQ the information is:
Host: www
Domain: domain.com
Webserver: domain.com
email server: domain.com
but the problem, continued. Do you can solved this problem?
Thanks:(

I had someone look at my configuration and he said it was exactly right.. but he removed it and readded it anyway (I had already done that 3 times). After that it started working. I haveno idea what was wrong.
