I think their should be a guidelines for recommendations on this forum. If you don't meet the guidelines the post is removed.

I think it should include

- Time spent with the company
- Domain name you host with the company or hosted at the company

Theirs too many of the following

- People posting negative feedback on companies without providing references.
- People recommending hosts they have not used
- Hosts recommending other hosts that they have not used.
- People giving praise when they own the company.

Well I like this guidelines, but then that also depends upon the nature of the post IMHO. If the member asks for people only with experience with the host they recommend then sure these guidelines should be in place.

However, some come here looking for recommendations based on opinion. If the host has a great reputation here that can be backed up by previous posts, then I don't see a problem with somone recommending them, so long as that is what the member is asking for.

That's just my two cents on the issue. It comes down to what the mods think of course.

I agree with CrazyTech. There can be two many rules.

If someone just wants an idea of what hosts are trustworthy or reliable then why should someone have to have used a host to recommend them? I havent used MyAcen but I would have no problems recommending you guys as trustworthy, why should I not be allowed to share that with someone?

If that's the case, the "previous post" has to be quoted.

Hosts with good reputation have 2 meanings on this board.

1) The member on the board is extremely active and popular, which does not have anything to do with the company itself.

2) The host is generally very good with very few or no complaints.

Many people tend to think a host has a good reputation because of point 1.

It's already against the rules to recommend a company you have no experience with right?

I don't think you should disallow people from recommending hosts they've not used, but it should be mandatory to include your experience with the host. i.e. "While I haven't used this company myself, I've heard nothing but good things about them"

You can't recommend a host based on opinion. You can only really recommend them if you have first hand experience. You can "suggest" one based on opinion, search results, feedback etc.

To the average person visiting WHT looking for hosting, what is the difference between a recommendation and a suggestion? That's just semantics in my opinion.

Semantics if you like, but if I was after a recommendation, (whether it be hosting, the best ice cream, the nicest pie) I would expect that you had actually tried it. Just because you see them in an ad and they *look * nice, doesn't mean they are. But you could suggest them, and I may or may not try them.

Spot on.
No need for a rule, the person making the post should be able to see a suggestion or a recommendation - its upto them which ones they decide to followup on.

Maybe we should toss the ones that say something like, "I recommend/suggest [hostname]."

Without saying what they are basing it on makes it useless.

Just like that guy that recommended you a few days back because of your forums :D

I agree with that.

I just don't think a lot of the posters looking for hosting are going to differentiate between and suggestion and a recommendation.

I think it should include

- Time spent with the company

that will silence alot of ppl in the reseller forum

- Domain name you host with the company or hosted at the company

Same as above , resellers are not going to want to have to wear a banner on their head just to , tell about a decent company.

- Hosts recommending other hosts that they have not used.

I personally have never used httpme but Id be blind not to see they are a decent host , I read Bobs posts read his clients post and visit his forum (yeah I do ) I watch how he deals with issues that come up , and watch how his clients are treated.

I feel thats enough to say he would be a good choice for someone.

Lets make so many rules that the life gets squeezed out of the place .Im not miffed at the person that posted this but I am getting a little miffed watching this place get ruled to death.
