Hi

I have a site up and running now and it is hosted with Venturesonline, I am really happy with Ventures they have been first rate in all departments and it pains me to leave, but leave I must. The reason is down to TAX, because the site is hosted in the US, the US government feel it necessary to take 30% of all income generated from adverts on my site, then the UK government find it equally necessary to TAX me on all profits!!!!!!
This as you can imagine puts a dent in any earnings I may have.

So I need some advice please on a High quality uk host, with the same spec as I have now, which is shared hosting on Linux with PHP and Mysql.

Regards John

I thought Matt had servers in the UK as well. Yet another vote for United Hosting, though. :)

How is the US government taxing you on your advertisements?

I'd recommend United Hosting too for UK hosting.

HOWEVER I'd say you read up on tax - there's a specific tax form for overseas citizens, to prevent taxation by the US government.

Been there, done there - the tax form was called something like "WIEN 8". I suggest you go to the US tax dept online and do a search.

EDIT - my bad, that's form is for artistic royalties - read the link above.

How much are you willing to pay per month?

Take a look at...

www.Myacen.com
During the signup process, you have a choice of server location.
United Kingdom, United States, or Australia.

To clear this tax thing up

When i contacted Google, they told me that because my site was hosted in the us I was liable to Tax on any earnings, even thought the domain is .co.uk and the site is aimed at a uk market.

So I am only doing this because Google who pay me the money in the first place told me I was about to be charged.

So if this is relevent to me I am sure many other sites will fall into the same boat.

Do you own the servers or rent them?

From previous discussions (I can't recall whether here or elsewhere), it was concluded that if you rent the servers you don't have any equipment in the US and therefore don't fall into US taxable category.

I work with international tax consultants specialising in US/UK issues and will ask their opinion on Monday as this issue affects me too. I will report back then.

As far as I'm aware from my own dealings with them, in order for them to withhold tax, you actually have to own equipment in the UK. Renting doesnt apply.

My vote goes to United Hosting, although I don't know the co you're hosted by right now.

Anyway, isn't there a double tax agreement between the US and the UK?
I'm sure there is, and it would mean that you can only be taxed in one of the two countries, not both.
Check that out, you've got to tell the US tax authorities, it definetely would not be automatic.

I have just signed up with AdSense. They have the following text refering to taxation:

United States (U.S.) Activities involve having employees or owning equipment in the U.S. that are involved in any way with revenue earned through the AdSense program. U.S. Activities include, but are not limited to, owning a web server or owning a hosting service in the U.S., or having employees in the U.S. who are involved in either:

o setting up your web server, hosting service, or website
o developing content for your website
o marketing to create a user base for your site
o telephone support for your site
o buying products for your site
o maintaining your site

Generally, using an unrelated third-party United States (U.S.) web hosting service to host your web pages, renting web servers that are located in the U.S. from an unrelated third party, or having your payment sent to a U.S. Post Office Box or mail forwarding address, do not of themselves constitute U.S. Activities.

Also the tax consultants I work with confirm this.
