View Full Version : creating web designs using Photoshop
cs_gamer 11-28-2003, 02:04 PM How do they do it??
I got a 30 day trial version of Photoshop, im also taking classes in Photoshop and HTML just because i want to learn the process of designing a awesome webpage. I've learned doing alot of design work like clan signatures, banners, wallpapers, and logo's all in 15 days, but on creating web desings, i 've already searched through the internet on any tutorials but i cant find any. ;/
Any gfx artists out there willing to spend some time and post here what the process is? do yu use any other program then PS?
thanks, :D
pycoder 11-28-2003, 02:18 PM You create the basic layout in Photoshop. Then you cut it up in ImageReady.
Informity 11-28-2003, 03:17 PM to make anything good, you will need around 18 months - 2 years experience to learn how to use the software properly and what techniques etc. to use.
Dissevered 11-28-2003, 05:00 PM There is no 1 process to use, photoshop looks pretty simple at first but you can do some really nifty stuff with it. i use it myself for my sites and they are noobish compared to what you can really do. i know ive seen some tutorials around somewhere, look hard you should find some.

Pheaton 11-28-2003, 06:16 PM Here are a good place that might be you started in web design.

intenseg 11-29-2003, 02:26 AM yea those tuts are awesome! Thanks for the link ;-)
http://pslover.com :)
Soon, you'll be making nice stuff :)
nomis23uk 11-30-2003, 05:09 AM instead of using image ready to cut the images up with, you can also use the slicing tool in photoshop cs, photoshop cs even lets you set the links, and alt settings to the slices too.
http://robouk.mchost.com is a very good place to start, thats where i started.
TheOtherOne 11-30-2003, 10:04 AM pay a visit to www.tutorialforums.com you should fine PLENTY of resources there ranging from graphic, to 3D, to flash to web design and so on.....
Enjoy!
Acecool 11-30-2003, 10:39 AM Check my sig :-)
Url in sig.. lol.
and my website etc etc.

Jamie Harrop 11-30-2003, 11:10 AM Some of those tutorial sites are brilliant. :)
nomis23uk 11-30-2003, 04:50 PM they are kool, it gets you learning the new effects and things, dont forget to save the styles and that as u go along then u can re use them in other websites ;)
When developing websites, I first draw designs with pencils and paper. Then when I think I've got an solid idea, I load up photoshop and create it that way. Once I find something I like, I then recreate it in html.

emzec 11-30-2003, 11:54 PM if ur graphics arent lining up right it sounds like ur using tables, and didnt set the padding and spacing to 0:) also tuts are nice and all but nothing beats just going in and building something urself, I used photoshop and taught myself for 3 months before I even know tutorials exsisted heh, ahh back in the day:)
cs_gamer 12-01-2003, 12:19 PM i was using the line tool. my mind totally blacked-out and i forgot that PS had a rectangle tool. lol, thanks for the new sites im learning new stuff everyday.
emzec 12-01-2003, 01:50 PM spoono.com if it hasnt been said yet, great ps tuts

RMF I use this method sometimes, how often do you end up with what you actually drew? :D
emzec 12-01-2003, 03:12 PM i never end up with anything remotely close to what I set out to do, sometimes its best to just open it up and let it all go:)
cs_gamer 12-02-2003, 01:02 PM www.threeboy.com is a good example of designing webpages where he usualy draws it out first on paper. than usues protoshop, actually coms out like what he draws. webmachine tuts are awesome too :D
kd7lxl 12-02-2003, 10:02 PM Ok, I've seen people use PHP to build and display graphics, how do I do it?!? I need to set somewhere that it's binary, not an ASCII... how do I do that?
cs_gamer 12-02-2003, 10:12 PM yeh i need to learn that too, lol, prolly a another search in google will help :)
A related post I did recently elsewhere: http://www.tutorialforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64038
P.S: Does http://www.threeboy.com/ open up for all of you?
kd7lxl 12-02-2003, 10:43 PM ah ha! I've answered my own question, I think.
<?
header("Content-type: image/jpeg");
?>
electra 12-03-2003, 02:23 PM I taught myself how.
Go to google and search for photoshop tutorials, there are some sites that are very helpful, and the process of following instructions on a step by step basis will help you remember techniques.
cs_gamer 12-05-2003, 11:18 AM w00t! i made a layout, its not a spoono or robuk style but i think its ok for a fist timer. time to practice on a "british" type design
cs_gamer, URL or screenie?
NickSA2003 12-06-2003, 09:00 AM Thanks for listing those tutorials, always nice to learn a new technique.
Fred2231 12-08-2003, 08:12 PM Well,
I usually sketch out by hand what im going to do first. After i have a general idea of what i want to do i start drawing some basic shapes in ps. I start to apply layer styles and filters that is the biggy and what really makes things look good. You just need to learn how to really use layer styles and filters because a lot of people over use the or use them wrong. All it takes is practice, after your 5th or 6th complete template you should start to get the hang of things. Good luck!
remember tutorials are just to get to know ps, but in my opinion u should just start off pretty quick with making basic websites... most tutorials just give load off unusefull stuff about filters wich u will never use in making websites anyway.
purebox 12-10-2003, 02:43 PM www.thewebmachine.com thay got good tutorials too

KGSource 01-27-2004, 05:25 PM Creating a new (ORGINIAL!) layout with photoshop takes time... using tutorials is fun an all... but its all in the imagination and layout. If you can't think of how you want the layout to look first you will have a hard time.
Sasan 01-27-2004, 07:28 PM Yes, when creating a large website I always sketch it out on paper, once I do that I open up photoshop and start making it, usually I will be half way through a design, then I get an idea and start all over again.
Remember this about using tutorials: Use them to help you gain knowledge about designing and how to use the tools, don't just use them and create the exact same thing.
Threeboy 01-29-2004, 01:03 AM i start in sketches for everything i do :)
cs_gamer 01-29-2004, 10:18 AM lol wazup threeboy, yah u guys should check out his site. pretty awesome
Threeboy 01-30-2004, 11:18 PM Thanks :D

actually, i personally think it takes more than just knowledge of the software, because honestly, it's pretty chump in comparison to what you should know in order to work professionally as a graphic designer / web designer.
1. Color Theory
If you don't understand color, and what each color represents, you're screwed. Making a website by picking and choosing whatever colors is never a good idea, you always want to be working with a color wheel.
2. Design Theory
You need to know how the eyes work when they see design. If you have arrows all around the border of the site pointing off the screen, your userbase is going to always be looking off the monitor subconciously.
3. Time
It takes time to be able to design at a commercial level. Granted, you may get a couple of small jobs here and there, but those should be considered training jobs for the real thing. If you're not comfortable with one aspect of design, work on it, because it will never look good to your clients if you explain that you can't do a certain request because of lack of experience.
As for the tutorials, they are generally good to get one comfortable with the software, but they reek havoc after people whore the filters and rely on mathmatic functions to create their "artwork". The best way to figure out how to create something is to attempt duplicating it. But the one thing that people need to have is self control, as cool as your re-creation may be, you will be violating copyrights (75% of a work has to be 'borrowed' to fall under copyright violations). So keep the re-creations to yourself, and once you feel confident enough, work on your own designs. Use your own logic to figure out where things should go, colors that should be used, and where your light source is coming from.
I could probably go on for hours, but this should be good for now :)
