View Full Version : Newcomer would like some advice before this evening....
PeanutUK 11-26-2003, 09:02 AM Hello everyone,
I was guided to this board and thought that it would be the ideal place to ask some questions.
I am in the position where I need to register a .com domain name and obtain hosting from a provider. The sight will be used for business purposes but is only just over 2MB in size and is not set to significantly increase in size.
I am have never put a site up on to the web like this and i need some advice on what the best host maybe. i am in the UK so a UK based host may be suitable?
i am also on a tight budget and cant really afford more than £30 -ish at present. Can someone suggest some options and explain the basic pitfalls I should look out for.
thanks for any help.
Is that 30pounds per year? Or per month?
If it is 30 pounds per month, you might want to consider pair.com, I have heard very good things about them, they are one of the top providers.
http://www.pair.com/pair/shared/
If it is per year, you might want to consider www.cheapukhosting.com I know the owner and he will take good care of you.
Good Luck.
Hello and welcome
With respect to the domain registration, the cheapest and best deal currently is USD 5.41 (incl. taxes) from www.ev1servers.net. But be noted that there are not that many options in their domain administration page. But going by what you wrote it appears to me that you do not want any such features. As long as you are able to edit the DNS entries of the domain indicating the hosting you are going to go for, it is fine and ev1servers.net's domain lets you do that.
On the other hand if you want additional options, you can go for www.namecheap.com for few dollars more. Spend some time and read the posts at Domain Names Forum in this site.
w.r.t hosting, I could suggest you few but then they would be over kill for your 2 MB requirement. So wait for others' replies.
Good luck!
Reality Hosting 11-26-2003, 09:24 AM If your serious about this business, I would suggest a budget of 7 - 10 USD per month. Do your homework on the host ou select and you'll be fine.

I would also like to agree I have also heard some great reviews about Pair Networks.
Unitedhosting.co.uk are a big user of these forums they would be worth a look too plus they have a UK office. I know they keep their servers very low load which is always a good thing.
Biowaste XP 11-26-2003, 10:14 AM For a good domain registrar, try GoDaddy.com. As for finding a web hosting in the UK, you can either search these forums or try the UK area of TopHosts.com.
Paul-UKWSD 11-26-2003, 11:11 AM You can try http://findyourhost.co.uk to search for UK hosts.
You should find a suitable host for your £30 budget as you won't need a large hosting plan for a site that size.
Dnslinux 11-26-2003, 11:22 AM I would suggest looking at 123 reg for registering a domain name and as Paul said, try find your host for a list of UK based hosts.
PeanutUK 11-26-2003, 11:55 AM I was thinking of £30 a year for the time being. I just need it up ASAP.
I will check out what you ahve suggested - but so many options!!!

If you need the site up ASAP ask the host you choose (if they do not provide it automatically) for the IP of the server, this way you can upload your website whilst the nameserver change on the domain name completes.
uneedawebsit 11-26-2003, 12:53 PM You should be able to get a Personal-type plan from a good quality host for about $5/mo.
I would suggest looking into how long they have been in the hosting business and what kind of uptime they have. If they have 3rd party uptime monitoring, ask to look at the actual stats.
The Internet is so global that it may not really matter whether the host is based in the UK or US or somewhere else. As a matter of fact, many UK hosts have their actual servers in the US because the connectivity is good here and the costs can be less in some cases.
PeanutUK 11-27-2003, 07:56 PM Decided to take up an offer from Gandalf, and what a nice guy heis too.
Hopefully the site should have 'propergated' any minutes.
<twiddles anxiously>
Knogle 11-27-2003, 10:27 PM PeanutUK, it may take up to 72 hours for your domain to propogate. It usually takes less then 12 hours for me, but that's because my ISP is on-the-ball.
