Hi all,

I am kinda in 2 doubts about a server I have but don't know what to do.

almost 5 weeks ago, I got a server with serverhost.com but had heaps of problems with hardware failing etc
The other week, Jeff took it offline and said he was going to replace the CPU and HD.

On Sunday he emailed me saying he hopes it is up by Friday (today).

I am hesitant to email him to ask him for an update as I don't wanna sound insensitive, but I have clients screaming at me wondering when it will be up.

What do you think I should do?

Hi James,

At bare minimum I'd suggest you

(a) keep your customers informed that there is a delay and that you will let them know an ETA as soon as you can. Also make sure you give them some kind of compensation (months free hosting or something similar)

(b) Check your contract with Serverhost and request compensation if you are indeed allowed.

(c) If it's going to take until Monday you should have some form of backup plan in place. PM Craig from Flump.net and he might be able to help you with something in the interim.

Finally, don't assume this is insensitivity. Get details of why the repairs will take until Monday and clarify what action is being taken. Also, get clear info on what will happen IF the parts don't arrive and can't be replaced.

To be honest I can think of no reason why a spare machine shouldn't be made available in the interim or the host can't replace the parts from a local supplier. It really shouldn't take that long but I'm only going on very limited information and I'm sure someone from a dedi-server host company could give you better advice on that.

Either way, best of luck.
