View Full Version : Losing Weight
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 03:03 AM I need to lose weight (basically go on a diet) I am 5 foot 7 inches tall I weigh around 155 to 160 pounds. Before I get married this summer I want to lose about 20 pounds. I use to be in okay shape (not much fat on me), but since I moved I haven’t walked as much (no real area to).
So my question is
1. What can I do exactly to lose weight? (What type of exercise?)
2. What kind of foods should I eat?
3. What foods should I avoid?
Thanks for the help!
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 03:05 AM also I heard there is drinks that help you lose weight, and does adkins (SP) work?
Knogle 11-25-2003, 03:07 AM I'd be interested to know too. I'm not 'fat', but i consider myself very fat. ;)

Jon FB 11-25-2003, 03:22 AM I drink alot of water... well I think it is alot I could be drinking more that is for sure.
How much are you suppose to start out drinking water wise? If you start out to much it can harm you in a bad way.
hmm water.. and Atkins Diet could help me...

I would suggest resorting to the fundementals for weight loss. Weight training is an important factor to weight loss though sometimes many people overlook it. By building muscle, you do not lose fat, however the more muscle you have, the more energy you burn when you do anything, thus making it easier to lose weight and stay in shape.
It's important to remember that sit-ups and crunches, while building abdominal muscle do not help burn fat. The only way to burn fat is to use up all the calories your body has in store and go further. Cardio is a must to meet these criteria. If your heart rate doesn't increase significantly (while doing an excercise), you're not going to lose weight.
So perhaps use a treadmill and some weight machines in your house or at a local gym? I tried running on an empty stomach (right when I wake up) and I always feel like I'm going to throw up afterwards... so I don't know if that's such a good idea, but it does burn fat, as you have nothing else to burn at that point.
Personally, I don't believe in diets. Just be conservative in what you eat. Common sense tells us to stay away from stuff that will obviously make us fat. However, I believe that limitation breeds temptation. Food binges aren't good, lol.
I've never been able to lose any weight myself though... but the things I mention above do scientifically hold true. Just some suggestions... At 5' 10" and 140 lbs (it never goes up or down, I don't know why), my doctor tells me I'm 15 pounds underweight, but I still think I'm fat... oh, well. It's probably because I'm young... really young (and still growing... I hope) :stickout: so I don't have to worry about this stuff yet.
But if you do try out these tips, let us know how it goes.
Good Luck!
net-trend 11-25-2003, 03:39 AM Diet wise...I think it's good to drink lots of fruit juices, youghurt and eat the green stuff but avoid the red stuff.
Mrdredd 11-25-2003, 03:45 AM There is nothing more efficient to burning fat than CARDIO
CARDIO CARDIO CARDIO
That'll burn the fat off, create endurance, and be good for your heart.
Run/Powerwalk/Aerobics/Karate/Boxing, etc. for ATLEAST 20min-30min EVERY day.

Wrong - Fruit Juices contain sugars which only adds to the problem - drink Water, water, water.
If you have a problem drinking water on its own - try adding a little lemon or lime to it.
If you need some kind of soda make it *diet* but even then, it only restricts the amount of weight you will lose.

I doubt the amount of sugar in fresh fruit juices are enough to worry about.
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 03:52 AM Well I do have good news I use to drink soda like it was water! I would drink about 6 pack to a 12 pack in 2 days or less. (that is when I was in High School) then after I got out of High School I basically stoped drinking soda (I still do but not as much, and am planning to quit totaly!) Now that is a big step for me personally...
I am now trying to eat less fatty food (wendys, McD's, and so on) I am slowly working at it.. its hard to taste that good... food. Though I am working on it. Soon I hope to not eat fatty food at all (but once in a while)
My main goal is to eat salads, fruits, veggys, meat.
I am going to start walking for about 30 minutes to an hour a day. Then starting to do working out here and their (starting out every day) Do some push ups, crunchers, and so on.
Alot of people say I am not fat at all and wish they where as skinny as me, but I think I am fat, but not really fat.
I was reading an atrical that is called "The Kick-Start Soup" personally that would put anyone life in danger. Though I bet their is away to put that idea in to effect, but not be harmfull at all.
Oh also did I mention I have the bow Flex, but I havent really used it.. Does it acually work?
Mrdredd 11-25-2003, 03:56 AM I drink a 12 pack of soda in one day - thats how bad I am :( but hey, im thirsty :gthumb:
Yah, the bowflex works - it builds muscle which in turns burns more calories.
Do the row thing - that is construed as cardio as well.
Gotta be committed with the bow-flex however, get a personal trainor to eval you, then setup a routine and follow it.
Work out every other day, and do cardio every day, watch your diet and you should start losing.
Remember, the key is to burn more calories than you take in.
BTW - Im 6'0 and ~220, not fat at all, but I do go to the gym every other day for 1 hour+ (not including cardio) and run every day for 20minutes. (gym days I do 10min treadmill, and 15min elipse)
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 04:05 AM Well my main goal is to eat less fatty foods and, trim down. I dont really want to look "great" but, at lease make me feel okay about my self.
When you think about it... it only takes 30 minutes a day to work out (work more or less) but, I am not sure if I was to lazy to try.. or thought it was to much work.. okay maybe it was both.
Though I am going to start tomorrow (though Thanksgiving I will give into only happends 1 time a year!)
I went from 1 12 pack a day (usally DP or Pepsi) then later on it went from 1 12 pack every 2 days then it went to 1 12 pack every week. Then it went to 1 6 pack every week. Then I slowly went down.
The most I have drink in soda was today. That was 3 sodas. I feel sick for doing I know I shouldnt of but I had a craving for a DP!
I would me more motivated if I had other people with me (eating healthy, working out), but NO one does it.
Trifolic 11-25-2003, 04:07 AM I read something once, I tried looking for the article again, but couldn't find it.
Go on a carb/starch free diet for 5 days. And everyone I know that has tried this including myself has lost 5-15lbs.
This means. none of the following
Bread
Pasta
Soda
BEER
Cereal
Oatmeal.
Or anything else conating Carbs.
In any way shape or form.
Its not a "healthy" way of doing it but there are many religions which have performed this diet as a "cleansing" process and works quite well.
While you are not eating those things listed above I recommend eating the following to keep your energy up
1.) Get some vitiman C in your system. You can have orange juice, but only 100% juice and only 1-2 8oz glasses a day.
2.) Boiled eggs.
3.) Chicken
4.) Salads (no dressing/croutons) or chick peas
5.) Fruits of all kinds
6.) Vegetables
7.) Pork
8.) Peanuts/Peanut Butter (added protein)
9.) Soy products. Tofu. etc..
10.) Water lotsa water 5-10 8oz a day
NO RED MEAT
Give it a shot.. Its only 5 days If you are unsure if something contains carbs, don't eat/drink it for these 5 days.
Hope this helps you out.. And let me know how it goes.
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 04:14 AM That almost sounds like the kick start soup =/. The thing I find funny is I can not drink water no matter how thirsty I am unless it is cold or ICE cold. I love salads now I am craving a salad :(

Jon FB 11-25-2003, 04:17 AM Okay a question on what I should add to my list of food shoping tomorrow...
I will need anything for a good healthy salad
water bottle (what size?) (how many times should I drink it a day?)
What other foods are healthy to eat?
I will be going shoping tomorrow so any listing would help alot!
Trifolic 11-25-2003, 04:23 AM JonFB, I'm telling ya man, try the diet, force yourself at all costs.. Mind over matter... you can do it! and you won't regret it.

I am thinking about doing it, but what happends after the 5 days? I would gain twice the weight back?
Trifolic 11-25-2003, 04:31 AM As long as you don't hound on fatty foods like candy bars doughnuts, 12 cans of soda a day.. You will stay that way.. It all depends on how you live.. If also depends on your metabolism.
You say your 160lbs now? Well with your normal eating habits have you been 160lbs give take 10 for the past year? If you answer yes.. then you will be then you will be the same minus the 5-15 that you lost givin that you are at the (take of the 160lbs.)
Hope thats no to confusing..lol
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 04:33 AM well I gain about 10 to 20 pounds a year (well latley).
Aussie Bob 11-25-2003, 04:45 AM It's pretty simple -
(1). No junk food.
(2). 1 hour brisk walking per day.
(3). Drink lots of cold water.
No need for a radical short term diet. You need a permanent change in lifestyle. Diets are short term and hardly ever lead to long term lifestyle change and betterment.
It's simple knowing what to do. It's hard to stick with it and not quit after a week. Do that for 3mths and you'll be well and truly on your way to your weigh goal. Also if you can do that for 3mths, you have created good habits that will be almost impossible to break. ;)
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 04:47 AM That is true Aussie. Like now I cant stop drinking water now I crave it. Though I am picky when it comes to water....

Ok, now no junk food and 1 hour of brisk walking per day [get that heartbeat up there!!], and you'll be right as rain in a few months. :D
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 04:56 AM Okay I can walk no problem, but how do you fight the urges to eat fast food? How do you break away?
Mrdredd 11-25-2003, 04:58 AM just think of how nasty it looks
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 04:58 AM also with salads you have to have dressings. Is dressing bad?
Mrdredd 11-25-2003, 04:58 AM yes, dressing is bad for you
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 05:00 AM Originally posted by Mrdredd

but but but.... a salad isnt a salad if you dont have dressing! What else can I subsitute instead of dressing????
Mrdredd 11-25-2003, 05:09 AM lemon or lime juice, mix in 2TB (terabytes :stickout) of low fat cottage cheese and a half can of tuna fish, and make the whole thing a meal
Rich2k 11-25-2003, 06:02 AM I weighed more than that but I started going to the gym every day and now I've lost around 25 pounds in 4 months. Whilst the weight is not exactly dropping off it's going down nicely.
Knogle 11-25-2003, 07:24 AM This is giving me hope. . .
Say i go to the gym/beach everyday for a 4.8kilometre run. . . and i stop eating junk food, which i've been hounding actually. I'm currently 165lbs -- what do you think my weight will be in a month?
Rich2k 11-25-2003, 09:02 AM Changing diet and exercise is a perfect combination. I still don't eat brilliantly but I have cut out a lot of junk food and beer!
I wouldn't like to guess what you'll weigh in a month's time but if you haven't lost weight I'll be very suprised.
However the one thing I've noticed about exercise every day is it doesn't just help you loose weight, you feel one hell of a lot better for it! Wow am I really saying this... a techy doing exersice?
hostpath.com 11-25-2003, 10:05 AM Take it from someone who has now lost well over 100 pounds: water is the magic potion. I don't exercise, eat whatever I want, and the only change I made was to switch to large quantities of water.
I did the Atkins Diet, which is a very good diet for the morbidly obese, but I stopped when I realized that there is one serious downside to it: because you can eat as much as you want, you never train yourself to eat less.
I now eat less automatically. It just happened, I didn't do anything to make it so, except switch to water as described in the other thread.
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 11:47 AM I think hostpath hit it on the nail. Drink alot of water (but not so much you will get sick.. or worse). From what I read and peopel say 1 gallon or less (starting out).
No soda
No Junk Food (you can go at it once in a while, but if you go every day dont)
Eat healthy food (mmm salads)
and Run, Jog, work out. (probabley 30 minutes and a hour each)
Mrdredd 11-25-2003, 11:51 AM Jon, fix your sig to a specific weight - say 160 since its higher and will give you a little more leg room to lose the weight.
"I weigh 160 pounds as of 11/ 25/ 03. I am on a diet and will report back on my progress!"
Thats nice :)

How close is that to a mile and how long would it take you to run it?
Its not really about distance but length.
Knogle 11-25-2003, 12:01 PM 4.8km is 3 miles. I'll take around 30 minutes to run that, though I hope to cut that down to 25 after a month of regular running.
Jon FB 11-25-2003, 12:05 PM I think that is pretty good. Though personally if I had to choose I would choose jogging over running. For me when I run I get tired alot faster, but when I jog I can jog for hours and hours (as long as I have music playing, and some water).
Last time I jogged (couple years back...) I jogged from my house (on one side of town) to the mall (the other side of town) I really didnt even knotice it, because I had music playing (which I think helps so much when working out, running, jogging.)

Yah - that should be fine.
I think you should notice a differance in your body type by the end of the month, and if you keep going it will do a whole lot at making you more lean. Around 3 months you should notice a nice total change.
Giaguara 11-25-2003, 02:51 PM atkins can be bad for you especially if you have issues with your heart or kidneys etc. and if you dont you may have later.
there was a ton of stuff about the diets in the newest wired magazine (on paper). atkins got worst points. and no wonder why.
NickDev 11-25-2003, 03:53 PM At your weight i would eat 1600 calories a day to burn, if you Eat to little beleive it or not you WILL gain weight!, your body will go into starvation mode and your metabolism will take some damage, Dont get your calories from drinks, drink water 24/7 do 20-40 minutes of cardio first thing in the morning when your stomach is empty.
Basically Burn more calories then you eat, if you have any questions feel free to ask me i body build and know a bit about diet/working out
Tropical Tundra 11-25-2003, 04:32 PM I lost 84 pounds through diet and exercise. Not Atkins or any specific diet. I cut out all junk food. McDonalds and Burger King is all crap. If I need to fast food I went to Subway. I switched from coke to diet coke. Sucked at first but now I like it. And then hit the gym. Now I go 3-5 times per week and I like it. At first I had to drag myself but now I enjoy going. Switch to low fat diet and start working out. Now I can eat most anything because I work out. I still watch what I eat and I smaller portions but I'm not starving myself. I still haven't stepped inside a Mcdonald's, Burger King, or Taco Bell in over a year.

Dan L 11-25-2003, 05:49 PM I don't feel like reading all the replies, so..
1) Cardio - Walk, run, anything.
2) Muscular - The stronger you are the better you burn fat.
3) Become a vegan. Only eat salads. Once you've gotten used to air you'll realize how easy it is.
4) Liquids instead of meals. 16oz choco milk and 16g fat.. its fattening, but not very solid, hence it makes a good replacement for meals.
I was 5'5, 165, and now I'm almost down to 140. :P
ilyash 11-25-2003, 09:40 PM SWIM... workout.. play sports
try to be able to say "i dont get in much.."

I'm looking forward to do that. I have to go through a fitness test that will determine whether I go to the army 2 months earlier or not. I really do want to pass it.
3 months sounds like a nice time! :D
Derrick 11-25-2003, 11:17 PM Not sure if this has been posted but if you are drinking a lot of water cut back on salt intake as much as you can. Salt makes you hold onto more water, so you blow up like a blimp :)
A good website is www.better-body.com then have a forum that is free to join and the owner Mark answers many questions like the ones that were asked above.

Knogle 11-25-2003, 11:21 PM Derrick, the most water you drink, the more salt/nutrients you lose (because they get 'washed' out). You have to take in nutrients somehow. . .

You can try Silk Soymilk too. The Vanilla taste decent and is not high carbs. The Chocolate and Plain are good too.
Jon FB 11-26-2003, 01:23 AM Okay well I started my diet yesterday night. I did some work out (crunchers, and push ups) I ate at wendys today (didnt really want to.. but I did) then tonight I ate a salad! I did some crunchers today and I did some push ups.
When my fiance gets back tomorrow she will be making my salads again! :P. (she makes the best salads ever)
Just to tell you I am out of shape...
I am in pain from last night work out... :o Just wondering is that good? I mean does that mean the fat is burning or something working in side that says that I am doing something good?

I'm 5'9 and weigh 250 pounds and all of it is not muscle, but a combination of muscle and fat. Basically i'm line backer material for football. The diet I did for a while was the Aktins Diet. All I did was eat meat, cheese, and at least 20 grams of carbohydrates a day. I did not do any execrise and I lose 4 inches off my waist. Now i'm on and off a diabetes diet. I usually have no sugars(except for Dr Peppers) and sugar free ice cream. The best brand of sugar free ice cream you can buy is Blue Bunny. They're website is http://www.bluebunny.com.
Rich2k 11-26-2003, 06:32 AM That's my problem I'm half muscle and half fat. Because I work out every day I'm in that horrible stage when I'm developing muscle but still got a layer of fat over it. Although it's slowly looking much better :)
