View Full Version : Yet again... host recommendations...

Hi, everyone. I'm new here and this is my very first post.

I've been searching this forum for a couple of hours now, and I am totally overwhelmed. I came here to research for a new host and I found WAY too much information ;) just more than I can process.

I read a lot of conflicting reviews, and I know that one host can be someone's best and another's worst. I was actually more interested in the bad reviews (and they tend to be much more specific and detailed...), so that I won't get burnt again.

I'm currently hosted at a certain host which I'd like to leave as soon as possible. I've been hosted there for 3 months now and had a disasterous experience with their almost weekly downtime, and a truely humiliating experience with their support. I've read good reviews AND bad reviews about them here... But I'm really set on leaving them ASAP, like I said.

My site is just a little personal site. I have no plans to become a reseller. I need PHP/MySQL - 5 databases will be more than enough. I'd love to have 10GB monthly bandwidth, but could sattle on 6. I need unlimited subdomains, no ASP, and a server that won't go down every week. I'm also very very tight with money (this the right term for poor, not cheap, right? ;) I'm not a native English speaker...), so I'm looking for something under 5$ a month.

So far I've got my eye on Netrillium, Mesopia and HostItCheap. Did anyone here have any bad experience with any of them? Can someone here recommend me another host which answers my very humble needs?

Thanks a lot in advance.

You can do a search in the forums for their names..

10 GB of bandwidth a month for under 5 bucks a month, your probably not going to get a great host. Your not upgrading your current situation you seem to be going down the same road money wise and host wise. I would suggest finding a host that will meet your needs on the support side and uptime side then worry about the pricing.

Do a search on the forums you will see who the good and bad hosts are.

Thanks

A good rule of thumb in my opinion is to base your pricing on $1 per 1 gig of transfer, or above.

Don't go with the cheapest offer you get in the request/offer section!

If you make a post in the offers section, you'll get quite a few responses from a variety of hosts...

I would suggest getting to know the owner or support staff before you signup. Just to see how it will run when you are actually paying for your services...

Good luck :D

Thanks, everyone. Like I've said, I'm totally overwhelmed and it's really hard to choose. I was burnt pretty badly by my current host and I don't want to live this experience again. Their plan was very similar to Netrillium and Mesopia, but as it turned out their downtime frequency was outrageous - about once a week (yesterday it was for 12 hours!) and their support was downright disgraceful. So these are the 2 things that really matter.

I don't need a LOT of space, and bandwidth-wise, like I said, even 6GB is OK, plus I need the php and mysql.

The server I'm currently hosted in apparently has a lot of difficulties with php. Most of the downtime applied to php and not html. Problem is most of my sites are based on php and all of them have php.index files. So, this is something you can't tell before you actually host a site in a certain company.

I have very little experience with this, so this is why I asked for your input. I did a search in this forum and I found, for instance, some threads discussing Mesopia. Their representative here seemed very helpful and professional, but I really can't tell how much that indicates real service after you've signed with them.

Netrillium seem reliable to me and I've heard some good things about them, but I'm a little deterred by the fact that they don't have a forum, which is important both for support issues and for "getting the feel" of that company from its current hostees.

Thanks for that rule of thumb, akashik. Mesopia (10GB/3.95$)certainly doesn't pass it. Netrillium, how ever, offer less bandwidth and a little higher price (6GB/4.50$) but they, too, don't pass.

I've been searching for hours now. Maybe some one could share some personal experience with any of these companies/ or others with such small plans?

Thanks.

Yeah, I'm sure... ;)
I want to hear from past and present hostees instead. These are the real stories.

Darwi, how much space do you need? How many visitors do you get a month? You say you don't need much, but 6 GB transfer for "a little personal site" is quite a lot.

I would recommend www.myacen.com as a good and relible alternative.

Well in my dealings with hosts and providers I think these three are the top three I have ever done business with.

http://www.verohost.com/
http://www.simpli.biz/
http://www.eboundary.com/

There are alot of providers out there but, like I said personal recommendation. :D

Thanks, everyone. I already signed with Netrillium. I hope I made the right decision. I didn't find any horrible reviews about them ;)
I was just very anxious to get away from my horrid horrid previous host.

I know 6GB is a lot, but that's because sometimes I need some huge transfers for my ftp, not related to my site. My site is really very small. Just a personal collective of some very small sites.

Thanks, guys.

Hi Darwi

I'm very sorry to hear about your past troubles. Just wanted to let you know that we did have a forum, which will be back soon after our planned site redesign.
