View Full Version : is there anyway to bypass a firewall (from behind?)
johnatha2004 11-23-2003, 05:36 PM Ok, heres the situation... im at college (yay), and the **** firewall blocks all ports except 80, which bites :) Does anyone know of a program that can basically allow me to play a game on port 2593? Im assuming im sol, as the remote machine is going to want to send information back on port 2593 (or whatever port is specified on the remote machine....
so, is there anyway i can do this? or no...
eddy2099 11-23-2003, 05:47 PM I believe the purpose of the firewall is to prevent authorized access and if there is a simple way around it, it will negate the purpose of a firewall in the first place. So officially no.
Of course, in theory if there is a way to have an intermediary listen to your request on port 80 then relay it to port 2593 and those the reverse when receiving information, it might be possible.
I am not sure if there is such a beast.
Then again, if you are in college shouldn't you be studying ?
webworkz 11-23-2003, 06:06 PM Not really, unless you are in control of the firewall, or find a very, very customizable proxy server [which includes NAT/port forwarding].
Basically, you're screwed.
Also, I doubt they are blocking everything besides port 80. You're telling me that ICQ, FTP, mail, etc. don't work?
I find that hard to believe.
Chances are, you could just ask the network administrator to open the port for you on firewall, or set all of your connections to ACCEPT established/related only, on any port.
Unless this is some ultra-conservative religious school (OMG VIDEO GAMES FROM THE DEVIL!!!), there is no reason that they can't open up requested ports.
Mrdredd 11-23-2003, 06:29 PM See if you can set the game to operate on specific ports, then port scan the firewall machine to check which ports are open and pick a range and gogogo.
I havent looked at this list recently, but I remember it had something about port forwarding a while back.
If not - check out google.com

johnatha2004 11-23-2003, 07:42 PM well, no they dont block every port, i was pissed at the time being i couldnt play yet another game,,, i do not have access to the firewall, and from what i hear the school doesnt want to open any ports they dont need to, i should have control over the firewall being i help employ all of thier teachers, BAH!
Anyway, does anyone know how i would go about using a proxy like that? I do have a spare computer at home I could use for the proxy... would something like WinRoute work?
johnatha2004 11-23-2003, 07:44 PM i dont know if it matters, but they use Novell networking, which i hate lol
eddy2099 11-23-2003, 07:48 PM The other option is if you can get a phone line, you might be able to hook on through a standard modem and play from there. You free yourself from the port blocking but then again everything else would be slower.

Unless they block ICMP too. :)
