I'm looking for suggestions on mattress' as it's almost as painful as finding a REALLY good host. A mattress purchase should be considered an investment so I'm asking you fellow WHT'ers what you sleep on for getting a good night's rest.

What is your recommendation(s) and why? Spring, coil, air, water, foam, latex, or combination? Interested in what kind of position you sleep in too.

TIA

I can't remember what they are called - but its the matress made out of that foam stuff, my parents have the mattress and I have one of the same type pillows. Takes a bit of getting used to but they are really comfortable. Bit on the expensive side though - just my pillow was $140 with the matress over $1000...

Englander makes foam mattresses, they are very comfy.

Not sure about the mattress I have, it cost $400.

I love my mattress but am not where I can look at the exact model at the moment. I highly suggest a pillowtop though. When we were shopping for a new bed, we went to about 4 stores trying out all of them.

Sure it takes a long time, but you have to pick the best one for you (and your significant other if applicable). Come to think of it, I really didn't get much say in the decision, but I fully trust my better half to pick something that works for both of us.

I will say I miss my waterbed that I had for years. Not so much the motion whenever someone moved, rather the heat function.

Check out Westin Hotels "Heavenly Bed". This is by far the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. I just bought a new mattress 2 years ago and wish I had known about these then. I would have bought a Heavenly Bed then.

The Westin sells the bed for about $2,700 and it's worth every penny.

You are correct about a mattress being an investment.
A good mattress can have a major effect on your over all health.
Be prepared to spend $2000 to $3500.
Most will have a money back guarantee these days so try them out.

The ones on TV are Tempurpedic. I have a Tempurpedic pillow but don't like it much. My bed is made out of latex - it's awesome. Just search for latex, visco elastic memory foam, etc and you'll find online sites with info about these beds.

I had a waterbed for many years when I was younger and eventually the maintence on it was becoming a chore. It also became very uncomfortable.

I currently have a really cheap spring mattress where the springs have me sore in the morning. At this point though I know that any thing decent would be a heck of alot better.

While originally I was looking into the Tempurpedic, I found a mattress forum (they seem far and few between btw) with some thing that have deterred me away from it. I wanted to get some opinions of everyday people rather than the 'mattress connoisseurs' and dealers on that particular forum.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions thus far, keep 'em coming.

Have one of those fancy inflatable models. I'm a really big person (over 6'6") and like to sleep on my side. This has made divots in every regular mattress I've ever owned within a very short time.

I've owned this one for almost 2 years now, and can change the softness in a few seconds if my back should be bothering me. No permanent deformation in the mattress...or my back.

Bought a Comfortaire air mattress from Air Bed Depot (http://www.airbeddepot.com) a little over a year ago. We got the Cerulean HP model, King size (because our 18-pound dog takes up the whole bed ;) ).

The mattress is incredible - I never want to get up in the morning. It's pure luxury for a relatively inexpensive price. The best part is, my husband can adjust his side to his liking and I can adjust my side to my liking. And when one of us rolls over in the middle of the night, the other one doesn't feel it.

We just got this one:

Definately the best I've ever owned, though, I'm sure there are better. It's pretty damn comfortable. :)

Looks nice, and the reviews I found seemed pretty favorable. JCPenny currently has the dual chamber full size mattress for $399. I currently have a POS twin and only would need a single chamber.

I went ahead and purchased a King Koil Regency tonight just for the sake of having at least a better bed. Will probably purchase a Comfortaire when I get a bigger bed though.

The Tempurpedic mattresses are overpriced! Their Queen is a good $3600! It can take up to 10 minutes for the mattress to conform to your body - and then it all depends on the temperature of your bedroom, if the AC is on, it takes longer to conform, and if its too warm, it doesn't conform right to your body (too soft).

My parents got one a couple months ago, and decided after about a month and a half that they were going to send it back and get their $3600 back (they have a 90 day sleep trial, luckily).

Come around tax return time (Uncle Sam is nice to us since we have 2 kids), we'll be getting a new mattress. The mattress that we have is 3 1/2 years old, and its all crapped out - box spring is broken, which makes the mattress sag in all the wrong places. Never buy a showroom model.... they're crap!

Anyways...
We're looking at the Comfort Select mattress. They're a heck of a lot cheaper than Tempurpedic. And if you share a bed with someone, they're just what you need. You can adjust your side of the mattress' firmness... you can have it soft, while your partner can have it firm (vise versa).

http://www.selectcomfort.com/

You can usually find their stores in malls.

But what's nice about the Select Comfort mattress is that they have 20 year warranties - and it covers EVERYTHING! You can't find 20 year warraties on regular mattresses. You're lucky if you get a 1 year warranty on most spring mattresses.

Hey rockergrrl,

You should look at Comfortaire. They're the same as Select Comfort -- without the high price tag. Comfortaire also has the 20-year warranty.

My parent spent about $2500 on their king-size Select Comfort. We got almost the exact same thing for about $1100 -- the different is, our air controls don't have numbers on them. But really, once you get the bed to a position you like (which takes a few days), you don't need to change it again, so the numbers are kind of worthless.

I did a lot of research to be sure that we were still getting the same quality. Check out google groups and epinions for Comfortaire reviews. I believe it's one of the best purchases we've ever made.
