What are the considerations regarding the option of having your "own ip" when setting up with/selecting a host.

The only thing you need a dedicated IP for is if you want ssl or if you plan on having a subdomain redirection service. Other than that its really pointless.

Or if the other person is having trouble with the domain name or something is wrong with DNS on your machine, they can access the site through ip.

It also has some advantages for (some) search engines.
