View Full Version : I need Windows2k Server "CONTROL PANEL!". Please help
hbconfederat 09-13-2001, 01:51 AM Hi,
My name is Brandon, and I am in desperate need of Free control panel software that will work on a Windows 2k Server. I have just bought a server OS: win2k, and I have bills up the @#)(@. AS you know, I dont want to pay anymore. Can anyone tell me of some sites that offer free control panel software that will work on windows 2000 server? I would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!
bluebeard 09-14-2001, 01:20 PM The only free one that I know of for win2k is from microsoft called WebAdmin, go to their site under server downloads. it is in the production phase hard to get going and bugs, but it's free.
Flesk 09-14-2001, 04:26 PM H-Sphere 2.06 was just released with support for MS-SQL database.
It already supports Win2k since version 2.0 and Linux.
Check it at www.psoft.net
bluebeard 09-14-2001, 04:47 PM I'm sure it's a good program if you have the money for all the hardware requirements:
H-Sphere 2.0 - Hardware and Other Requirements
H-Sphere 2.0 requires more than one computer to operate properly. While it can be installed on one machine, we do not recommend such configuration.
The computers needed:
Server #1: Control Panel
Server #2: Unix Web Server (can be more than one)
Server #3: Mail Server (can be more than one)
Server #4: DNS Server (two is recommended, any number is supported)
Server #5: Win2000 Web Server (if you want to provide NT hosting)
Server #6: MySQL Server (if you want to provide database hosting)
Server #7: RealServer (Can be Win2000 or Unix)
You can merge #1, #2, #3, #4, #6 together or any other way.
Win2000 web server has to be separate from the rest.
DNS and Mail can be shared with Win2000 and Unix Web Servers.
Control Panel Server is required.
Additional servers can be installed at later times.
And at $4.50 per account license fee you could run into a lot of money.
Flesk 09-14-2001, 04:57 PM You only need 2 to 3 computers to start.
What kind of hosting are you planning on providing with less than 3 computers?
bluebeard 09-14-2001, 05:08 PM If you read the first post by "hbconfederat" he asked a question. I have more than enough servers.
But thanks for the reply, it does bring up a good point for hbconfederat.
floyduk 09-17-2001, 06:27 AM Quick related question - Is there any reason that the Web Server machine and all the other machines need to be physically located together? Do they, for example, need to be on the same subnet?

namit 09-20-2001, 08:07 AM Hi,
Its tough to get a free control panel for win2k with all the features required. The only one which i have come accross and has all the features a hosting company needs is hosting controller, but its not free it costs $300 i guess.
You can try the demo, its pretty cool. www.hostingcontroller.com
Thanks,
Namit
Flesk 09-20-2001, 09:39 AM no, it costs $500.
bluebeard 09-20-2001, 10:48 AM You are correct it is $500 per server, it seems to be a good program a little twitchy at times but overall pretty good. The support is good but slow to respond.
I still say we all get together and build our own:)
Flesk 09-20-2001, 11:01 AM What do you mean by "build our own". Was that just a thought or you really have that going?
Are you in conversation with other people for that purpose?
First you have to have a group of developers interested in wasting their time with it. Second, developers are nothing if theres no software designers behind them to make a good software thought on the users perspective and not the programmer perspective.
It's really a big project. If you're aiming high that is. But if you want to make a cpanel for win2000 with not so many features than it can take months, even years, for costumers to adopt it because they'll be waiting for the right feature to be present.
bluebeard 09-20-2001, 11:48 AM Not really, I know a few folks that were talking about a open source ASP project. This is for win2k iis that is based on a stand alone ASP source code.
You can get a couple of people that know their stuff and you could send it out over the internet to have other programers build upon it and in about six months seven months you can have a working application.
we are not talking about designing a new operating system such as linux or dos. asp can interact with everything needed to control a iis server.
Just a thought
dbarker 10-10-2001, 02:07 PM Hi,
It is an interesting idea and one that a friend and I are starting to work on. We are writting it in ASP and using some of WebAdmin as a basis.
David
Flesk 10-10-2001, 02:27 PM It's a waste of time doing it in ASP right now. You should consider instead doing it in ASP.NET if you plan to develop it for the next years.
