I ordered a $55 Celeron server with NO CPanel and RH 9 on Tuesday, Nov 18. Approximately 24 hours later, I got an email stating the server was ready. I was happy. I ping <14 ms from my home DSL line and get good throughput.

I don't care for RH much, so I remotely upgraded the server to Slackware 9.0. Worked perfectly.

This morning, I am compiling various things... sendmail, bind, etc.. and suddenly I get disconnected. Immediately, I try to reconnect, but SecureCRT pops up a message stating that the server's RSA key has changed and this could possibly be a "man in the middle attack". I try to connect again and get the same error. I wait a couple of minutes and try again. This time no RSA key error. I take a quick look around the server and everything looks OK.

A short while later, the whole thing happens again. This time I accept the "new" key and continue to try and log in and it won't let me.

I have a few servers, so I tried connecting from all of them and end up getting the same type of problems.

This behavior seemed to indicate to me that someone else was trying to steal or use my IP. So, as a little test, the next time I got disconnected, I immedately opened up my browser and connected to my IP. Bam.. a CPanel default screen pops up. I DON"T EVEN HAVE AN HTTP SERVICE RUNNING ON MY BOX, let alone CPanel!!! Definately something screwed up on their network.

I first notified them of this issue at 5:30 AM PST. My first response didn't come until 11:30 AM. Still issue persists.

Hopefully this can be resoved soon. I know I shouldn't expect so much from such a low cost provider, but for $55 I had to give it a shot. I really like my connection to their network... when it works.

Sounds like they've reassigned your server IP. Can you access it via another IP that was originally bound to your server?

I never changed my IP. It is using the same IP it was set up with. They did allocate me 10 IP's, I guess I could try one of the other ones. I will wait a little longer to see what happens. I see their support guy has logged into the console.

As mentioned earlier their support could be better...response times are very slow...but I hope that they will overcome this.

Well I know that Sales and Technical Support only works from 9:00AM to 5:00PM PST excpet for their Reboot guys who work 24/7 supposedly according to what they mentioned to me earlier. But you should try giving them a call at 1888.585.8889 and see if you get any response or perhaps email them at support@managed.com and in the subject line put Attn: Jack and make a CC to reboot@managed.com and you should receive a prompt response.

Good Luck!

UPDATE

I pinged all of the IPs I was allocated and they all show active. I only activated one on my box. Obviously they have assigned my IPs to someone else. Why is it taking them so long to figure this out?

I'm also having this problem... Yeh i agree with RutRow i think they've assigned the IP's to someone else. I havent been able to access my server for the past few hours. I've sent several emails to the support and reboot@managed.com but they have yet replied... its been hours now and my client is not happy. His site is down which is quite upsetting for both me and him since his site generates 1 million pageviews a day. Errors like this hits me and my clients hard and it seems that it is their fault for all this problem arising. I wish the guys at managed.com would 'manage' things more carefully.

The speed and server is great, but they really need to work on their support and help... waiting hours just to get something fixed is not good enough.

Support is only available from 9-5 unless you need a reboot? What if a reboot isn't the solution for a problem?

Kpopper, I don't want to be rude - but if uptime / stable support is so important for you, why are you choosing an extremely cheap host who's been around for maybe 2 months ?
I'm not saying Managed.com is bad - time will tell us - but if I were hosting important sites of me and/or my customers I wouldn't take the risk..

It is very irresponsible for you to host your clients on a provider who is untested, and not long ago, didn't exist.

No, this isn't you get what you paid for, this is a case negligence on your own behalf.

I would advise that you show a little better diligence when choosing a new host. Ie; test them first

i chose a cheap host because i'm sponsoring my client in return for banner space. But still managed.com should have been more responsible. I have not yet recieved an email from anyone at managed.com in regards to the problem.. :(

Greetings,

Everyone just need to take a deep breath and calm down. First, all orders without Cpanel have been processed and activated within 24 hours. Some Cpanel servers are taking longer than usual to set up because the FTP site that Cpanel set up for has been having problems for the past few days with the downloading of new licenses for each server. Some of the downloads were dropping rpm and other packages.

We have been in contact with tech support at Cpanel and future download and installation will be much more efficient. We're also reassigning more people to tech support to increase response time.

For the record, our managed services are free as specify in the professional support page -- https://secure.managed.com/service.htm Items such as manual reboot are processed within 30 minutes on a 24/7/365 basis. Since we have a FIFO (first in, first out) support system, some customers will have to wait for their turn.

People also forget that Managed.com provide dedicated server -- not virtual hosting. The hand-holding goes only so far. This means server administration tasks are the responsibility of each customer. We also strongly recommend that customer read the Cpanel User Guide -- http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cp/index.html for answers to frequently asked question.

FYI -- Here's the MRTG for one of our IP block in case you have questions about network uptime -- http://mrtg.managed.com/1a/66.79.161.254_25.html

MSG Inc. i still dont understand why i cannot login into my WHM account.. is it because you're getting new license? But still, why are my clients site down as well?

I think its an IP not a cPanel/WHM issue. thanks

Please contact support@managed.com (attn: David) with this problem. WHT is not a proper place for support because we actually do need to verify your identity and ownership of the server.

MSG: Please tell me you are not referring to my situation. I never asked for any administrative support. I know I am using an unmanaged server and that is specifically why I chose it. The IP conflict issue was obviously not my fault. Please, I am not trying to be combative, but I would like an explanation of what happend and what will be done to prevent further issues.

Then why do you call yourselves Managed.com? If the servers aren't managed, why mislead your customers?

To me, "managed" means you can call your provider with pretty much any question and they will do their best to answer it. I know this is what customers who choose managed providers like ServInt and Rackspace expect, as well. I understand that your margins are lower than ServInt or Rackspace, but don't mislead your customers by naming your business "Managed.com" and setting up expectations you can't deliver.

Wait a minute. You chose a provider named Managed.com specifically because they were unmanaged?

You people confuse me.

OK Erica, I will agree with you that the domain name is misleading, but don't be naive. It has been beat to death on these forums that the servers are not managed.
